not exact fits to your specification, but try these on anyway:
Videodrome
Ersaserhead
Scanners
A Clockwork Orange

I've mentioned Scanners. ;) I've seen Eraserhead, it was middling, and A Clockwork Orange was great but much less sci-fi than the ones I mentioned.
metalgearsolid
John Carpenters Ghost of Mars.

Ok, some of these suggestions are terrible (imo, because I've seen most of them), so I'm going to alter the thread title. Feel free to mention movies that you think are in the vein of the ones I'd mentioned (if you'd seen them), or simply list your favorite sci-fi flicks.

I thought it was a decent adaptation of the book, but yeah, no movie could ever really even *touch* the book. :|

i thought you were after good movies with a preference of them being sci-fi, but you're really after sci-fi with a preference of them being good :(

disregard mine in that case.. except maybe Videodrome

I've seen all the ones you mentioned save for Videodrome, and I shall reiterate that I mentioned Scanners, which I liked very much. ;) Yes, I'm after sci-fi movies that are really good, which are ultimately very few (imo). Being John Malkovich is agreeable as well, but it isn't sci-fi, it's fantasy. :)

Ahh, I see Cronenberg is behind Videodrome (as he also is behind Scanners and The Fly), nice...should be in the typical Cronenberg style, then.

By and large I favor sci-flicks that are usually under the Drama / Sci-Fi / Mystery / Horror genres (en masse), according to IMDB.com

as for favorite sci-fi flicks, one that comes to mind is Total Recall :)
