I'm personally quite fond of movies that boggle the mind, whether they're philosophic, thought-provoking and deal with human emotions, or just really spaced out, so to speak (à la The Quiet Earth is both), and as a rule prefer such movies to those that are generally ascribed the 'sci-fi' genre, (i.e. spaceships, big explosions, aliens, à la Aliens/Predator/Star Wars).

some of my favs:

Blade Runner
The Quiet Earth
Scanners
The Hidden
2001: A Space Odyssey

Post-apocalyptic-esque ones are a plus! :)

a lot of you say this movie blows, but if you've read anything about.by carl sagan, you'd know that when he was alive, he was theorizing things about space that were WAY ahead of his time, things that were unbelieveable then, but are common fact now. the man was truely brilliant, both as a writer, and as an astronomer.

Thanks, I've seen it though, nothing in comparison with the ones I mentioned, (IMO), frankly I found it quite shallow and nothing more than a blockbuster hit. The movie may not do the book justice, for I didn't read the book so can't argue over the matter, but after all I'm asking for movies.
