i'm a firm believer in the UNFORTUNATE state that to become successful you do not need necessarily to be good.
to become successful - you need to effectively market and promote.
it's a rule that's not only applicable to dj'ing but to just about everything else in life.
FOR EXAMPLE: would you drink a brown acidic syrupy liquid that destroys your teeth and decays your enamel? |

that theory can certainly apply when you're looking at things on a much larger scale, but you need to take into account that the majority of TA doesn't give 2 s about how "well-marketed" or "wittily-promoted" something is. they care about talent and quality. |

aha
so if that is true. why dont you name your promos
"Myra Romano Summer 2006 promo" etc.?
hardly any dj would - because promoting and marketing your sound is just as integral as creating it. |

Yuris, just because you see the world through a certain lens doesn't make it true for the rest of us. ;)
I find it hard to believe that you simply know all of our motivations for what we do. |

because the mixes i have put up for download here are not promos. :p
and i've actually seen tons of promos out there that are named in that fashion. a promo is doing just that... it's being used to promote. DJs shouldn't get booked based on a funny mix name or by showing how clever they are with words. |

i'm simply pointing out that you guys are erroneous in your rapid attempt and gang-up to bash this guy's clever gimmick.
and i explain why.
so rob,
would you drink a brown acidic syrupy liquid that destroys your teeth and decays your enamel and stains your teeth and has absolutely no nutritional value whatsoever? |

I believe a more apt analogy in this situation would be if Coca-Cola was criticizing the ingredients Pepsi used to make it's cola, then subsequently using those exact ingredients in its product. |

I actually agree with you totally. Like any piece of art, a dj mix technically should speak for itself! You should not have to explain it or describe it, apart from giving an indication of what genre its in, just to help ppl decide whether they should listen to it.
And, this may contradict what I said earlier, lol. But this is totally how I feel. But, it's nice having a fun mix name and image does have a lot to do with how a product is received by the public. So, I can see why ppl try to dress up their mixes. I guess I'm rambling.
However I must also add, another reason to label something as a "promo" is that in doing so, you are saying it is not to be sold. That is pretty important actually (at least it used to be) because there could be legal ramifications, if you dig far enough into it. But with so many mixes out there in this day and age, I don't think that is as big a factor. |

that wasn't an analogy and you totally missed the point. which was that with enough marketing muscle not only can you convince people to drink but you can also convince them to pay to drink it.
in the perfect world, yes all dj's should get booked purely on their talent, skill, blah blah blah. but it's not a perfect world. |
