Touchy Attleboro school outlaws tag from its playground
By Renee Nadeau
Wednesday, October 18, 2006
Tag, you’re out.
Tag is now banned from the playground of Willett Elementary School in Attleboro. Touch football, dodgeball and all other unsupervised chasing games have also been taken out of play.
The ban is setting the stage for a schoolyard knock-down-drag-out between parents, some who believe the playground police have gone too far by calling a time out on the time-honored children’s play, and others who feel that it’s about time the whistle was blown on these competitive games.
The new recess rule comes as a surprise not only to parents, but to some Attleboro School Committee members. Because the policy is not district wide, it was never presented to the committee.
“I’m just finding out about it,” said Helen Johnson, a School Committee member from South Attleboro. “It was not voted on at any School Committee meeting.’
The rule was championed by second-year principal Gaylene Heppe. She claims the rule is nothing new. It is part of a broader playground rule that has been in effect for five years banning hitting and inappropriate touching.
Willett Elementary School joins a growing list of schools across the country where kindergarten cops have taken aim at classic children’s games, citing the risk of injury and litigation. Cities like Charleston, S.C., tackled touch football, while Spokane, Wash., and Cheyenne, Wyo., ousted good old-fashioned tag from their schools.

I cant believe the atmosphere that we in North American society are creating these days.
Tag, touch football, and other "unsupervised" running sports are banned from an elementary school's playground bc of fears the kids could possibly hurt themselves (... and then the parents may sue the school) !!! *unbelievable*
ING RIDDICULOUS.
I cant imagine growing up as a child with some of these new laws and rules that we're throwing in place. Can't play tag at school?? How the hell can you be a kid anymore?!??? :conf:

remember to place the blame where the blame is due...THE PEOPLE SUING THE SCHOOL, not the schools!
Schools don't do this to be mean or overly protective...they do it for liability purposes. So long as our laws allow idiot parents to sue the school for like this, I fully support schools covering their asses.
blame the parents! |

Sorry, I thought that was clear.
Im upset at the 'environment' we have created w/ litigation, that the schools (or just this school) need to take this action order to protect themselves!
WHUT BULL!
I cant believe things have gotten to a point where a parent suing a school for such a thing as this is a serious concern!
Ridiculous the things ppl/organization/institutions are sued for... that proceed to hold up in correct! completely ridiculous. |

That's ing outrageous. All the parents complain b/c their kids are fat and they don't get any excercise...yet they're sueing the schools b/c they don't want to allow their kids the 15 minutes of actual excercise they DO get? ing parents.
The next thing you know, children running period is going to be banned b/c if a child runs through a city park and falls down and breaks his arm, the parents are going to sue the city. |
