Alright, about two years ago I applied to apply to become an apprentice in Local 3. Local 3 is the electricians union in NYC. And yes, you have to apply for an application. My dad has been in the union for nearly 30 years so I figured I'd give it a shot and see what happens. Everything went well, including my interview which was so long ago I don't even remember the month. That went great. After I took the interview I was all ecstatic about becoming an electrician. The money is fantastic, FULL benefits for my family (when I get one), raise every year, the works. The downside is you work outside most of the yearand you wake up around 4:30am to be at work at 7am. During the time in between my interview and now I decided that I might want to become a math teacher. I enrolled in school at a local community college with the intentions of graduating from there and going to another SUNY school. Today I got a call saying that I was accepted into the union once I pass the physical. Now I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. I have NO idea what I'm gonna do. I need to decide before I register for spring classes. HELP!!!

there's also nothing like learning a trade such as being an electrician and even better since it's unionized.
that was my two options to consider was to go the union route, learn and hands-on skill and be content with making money doing what i was taught and having benefits to support my family which is all fine and dandy. Some people think that is the dream job and I know quite a few people who are in unions and live a luxurious lifestyle.
or go to school and learn a skill i can use however i wanted, which I ended up doing with computers. this allowed me the opportunity to use my skills to learn business which in theory gives me the skillsets to run my own business etc.
both approaches are decent, but to go on topic as per above, if you want to go into teaching, do not expect to make a lot of money. if you go union, expect to work hard for your money. |

Do the electrician thing. You are already there, and in the union (which is FANTASTIC BTW!) Why spend more money for school, bc now you have to have your masters to continue to teach (ie; you can teach with a bachelors as long as you get a masters in a certian amount of time).
Also, in the union you will get a lot better money and benefits. My ex is in the same union and is making LOOT. I wouldn't teach unless you are planning on teaching in a private school, which is REALLY hard to do nowadays. Bachelors teachers get paid and have to put up with a lotta too.
theres my answer;) |

really? wow i didn't know that. my sister just passed her test but she's teaching for a private school.
so are unionized teachers the ones who are randomly placed in public schools across the metro area? |

it's not so random. plus, since the dude teaches math he can exert a significant level of influence as far as placements are concerned.

to the OP: unless you have a burning desire to teach, stay electrified: you already have your foot in the door. if you decide you don't like it and want a change, your ability to teach math will allow you to land a teaching gig should you so choose. |

Thanks guys for all your answers so far! I keep reading all of your responses over and over again to see what everyone says. I really want to teach but I know they don't get paid that great and they have to deal with the occasional "trouble maker." The kids don't bother me, it's the money part. I was kind of looking forward to teaching kids and (hopefully) having an impact on their life in some way. Who know's what'll happen. I still have no idea what I'm gonna do (I have a few weeks before I make the decision). This sucks, I picked the wrong week to quit smoking.
