it raises the question that I've always wondered. Why aren't metal detectors such as in airpots MANDATORY? They used to do it here at the Ridout (a ty club known for violence). They had 5 bouncers at the front, they scanned both your license and your body, did a frisk, etc. Any beeping, you had to empty all your pockets, etc. The Phoenix here had a shooting about a month ago, the next week they had metal detectors, just last night I noticed they don't have them anymore. It's really easy to get that damn out of your establishment.

Better enforcement of laws would help.
Doesn't help when ppl get arrested for crimes, only to be let off on a 'technicality'

Sure it cures the patronage of the gun problem but what of the employees carrying weaponry?

You are right, it's the music, but not any particular genre per se.
Face it, most of the nights are top 40 in the downtown core. The difference beteen the 90s and now is the fact that there are about 10 times as much to do musically in that few block radius now.
The concentration of people from 9pm-4am Thursday night to Sunday is mind-boggling.
Also, I don't know what city you were in, but downtown ha always made headlines, I moved to Toronto in 96, and every weekend there was something violence related. Maybe not in our scene, but the Bars and Pubs ruled the land @ the time and there were stabbings weekly back then, just like now.
They just mostly took place on Queen St @ Velvet Underground, Horseshoe etc, or in College holes like Whiskey and Joker in the district.

the difference is that hip hop and gansta rap wasnt so prevailent in top 40 as it is now.
And yes there were some incidents but never shoot em up styles and you never really heard of deaths as a result.
Fights always happened but not shoot em up styles like now.

I guess club owners should be prosecuted for allowing their staff to carry illegal weapons while working in THEIR establishment. But I'm sure the case of a bouncer using a weapon on a patron is rare. Aren't bouncers usually attacked for whatever reason?
And a lot of the problem is that violence occurs outside clubs when people leave...

on a side note: a guy I work with told me about a party he was at here where one guy was 'frontin' on another smaller guy. The small guy called him out on his tough guy act and told him to hit him as hard as he could since the big guy was claimed he would knock anyone out cold who stood up to him. The bigger 'tough' guy stormed out and came back with a gun pointed it at the small guys head. The small guy grabbed the gun, disarmed the big guy and hit him so hard he went out cold. When he came to he was being driven to the hospital by the small guy. The small guy told him to stop being a and learn how to behave properly. He dropped him off for cat scans and a nose adjustment and told him to never bring a gun to a fist fight again.
