U.S. is most unfriendly country to visitors: survey

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Rude immigration officials and long delays in processing visas have turned the United States into the world's most unfriendly country for international travelers, according to a global survey released on Monday.

The survey showed that the United States was ranked "the worst" in terms of visas and immigration procedures by twice the percentage of travelers as the next destination regarded as unfriendly -- the Middle East and the Asian subcontinent.

The survey, of 2,011 international travelers in 16 countries, was conducted by the polling firm RT Strategies for the Discover America Partnership, a business-backed group launched in September to promote travel to the United States and improve the country's image abroad.

More than half of the travelers surveyed said U.S. immigration officials were rude and two-thirds said they feared they would be detained on arriving in the United States for a simple mistake in their paper work or for saying the wrong thing to an immigration official.

"The entry process has created a climate of fear and frustration that is keeping foreign visitors away," said Geoff Freeman, executive director of the Discover America Partnership. "The survey shows there is more fear of our immigration officials than of terrorism or crime."

The country is unfriendly and the immigration officials, some of them, are rude. There is a difference between the two terms.

the thread title is misleading, but I do agree, USA immigrations really sucks. They take a long time, the people there don't know the rules yourself. I've been caught up for ticking the wrong box once when doing exactly what I was told to the time before.
when they finish processing the US citizens, they start pulling foreigners from the back of the line instead of the front, which can really piss you off if you've stood in line for an hour whilst 2 people process arrivals. I can only really comment on LAX and JFK but they both showed the same crap approach

Every country has rude people. I live in the UK and this country naturally has an aggressive mentality every just wants to get drunk or have a fight, but there is aggressive people in every nation.

My personal experience of Septics (yanks) some are really decent cool and intelligent people others are twats it's the same with every country. I was out in New York in September and everyone was sound, only had one run in when some wanker asked me for a cigarette I said I had one left so he called me a limey mother ****** so I called him a ing American cvnt.

If an immigration officers rude to you, it's simple just tell him/her that their only doing that job because they were too to be a cop, and suggest if their feed up with a career in immigration's then perhaps they could try be a security guard at the local supermarket.

you're totally right with the idea of saying that to one of these z but I doubt it'll make things easier for you :stongue: :stongue:

I'm a US citizen so I never really had problems in regards to border officials apart from once when coming back into the US from Canada by car.
The prick kept questionning me on the fact I was American and how I became one because I was born abroad ....
idiot had to search my car and call in his supervisor and just be a lame motherf*cker ...

I also always get searched at airports but I cooperate so usually the search is over in no time ...

The US customs and immigration procedures as so inefficient it's really lame coming from a country that tries to be efficient in so many different things ... but I guess anything governement related doesn't count...

Now speaking of the people in the US I think in general they are pretty friendly but there is undoubtedly an issue of shallowness. Plenty of people the first time you meet them will treat you like their best friends but then you try to be real friends with them in the long term and they don't make time and space for you .... /blah

Thank god I'm not the only one who's had too go through that, for awhile I thought its "just me" and started too take it personally. Ended up packing my crap and ending up in Australia.
But not before being 'terrorised' by the airport security animals who thinking a non-white, five foot stuff all tall yuppie women in $5000 suit armed with nail files and smelly cosmetics are going too hijack the nearest plane and crash it into something important.
Well, I wasnt thinking that before I got too the airport, gave some serious thought too it later sulking in a back room while they ripped my luggage to bits.
"Whats this?"
"A nail file"
"What is this?"
"It's nail polish remover and cosmetics"
"Why do you have it!"
"Umm, I'm a beauty therapist and salesperson for [large cosmetics company]
"Where are you from"
"Says there on the passport"
"So you travelled in the middle east very recently?"
"Well, yes. Arabs buy our stuff too."
"Are you an arab? You look weird."
"No"
"I reckon you are..."
So he runs off and grabs some more of the assorted 82IQ knuckle draggers and thinks he's got himself a gen-u-ine ah-rab t'rrist and they do some background checks on my visa. Well wouldnt you know it, its 3hrs overdue because the monkeys behind the counter at the place too get it extended couldnt work out how too give me a work visa for 24hrs in less time than it takes too launch a moon mission.

Another 3 hours go by as theyre continuing too rip my stuff too bits and x-raying everything, they where really not pleased the company I worked for was French and hence where reluctant too call them too find out why one of their salesmuppets was in the country, so that tacked on an extra 2 hours while they decided that they'd need someone too speak french (heck even I dont speak french) and my flight is somewhere long gone.
At least I wasnt 'cavity' searched, threatened with it a few times and bombed with enough x-rays and other stuff so I'd have a healthy green glow, think my kids will probably come out with an extra head or something as a result.
But no, after they did figure out I'm just some dumb, tired and now very, very cranky person who's missed their connecting flight back home. I rarely swear and told them too f-off which didnt endear me anymore too them and got plonked down in departure under close scruitany for another 5hours while my flight roster was updated.

By and large most Americans are easy enough going, I wouldnt so much call them rude but they are sometimes hopelessly naive when it comes too dealing with someone who's not from their country.

Wow, I'm surprised people from other countries even want to come here for a visit! Aren't they worried that they'll catch our fatness and rudeness?

British immigration can also be rude, but Americans are the worst by far. Stupid people with power are the most annoying people ever.
