Sasha & Jimmy van M @ Space Review (pg. 3)

Jimmy Van M is an acquired taste, and it's sad that he's so underrated.
So far I've only seen one person in this thread who understood what Jimmy set out to do - give you a proper warm up set for the main DJ.
JVM is a DJ's DJ to me, in the same league as Danny Tenaglia and Laurent Garnier.
Instead of opting for a simple and obvisous warm up set, he chose the path less taken. He was there to exposes you to different types of music. You may not get it at first, but his sets linger with you, b/c whether you realize it or not you heard ambient, Techno, Progressive, House, and more within his set, and it was trancy in that it was a rollercoaster of a ride with highs and lows. It actually made sense that he mellowed out again at 2 - he brought it back down before you all were supposed to explode when Sasha got on.
Since Jimmy knew the party would go on past sunrise, he was SMART in not banging it out, but rather giving you a true atmospheric Progressive set. The problem is that you need real music heads to appreciate DJs like Jimmy. I guess it's hard for the Miami folks to get into this stuff. Many of you think Armin is boring, and gthink PVD isn't Trance simply b/c he plays more than just Trance. How do you guys ever expect to appreciate and enjoy something deep and intelligent like a JVM set?
BTW, he plays peak hour/peak time Progressive when he's the headliner, but as a warm up DJ he takes it to a very different route.
Bottom line: This guy, Jimmy Van M, is one of the few DJs that still spins the kind of sets that made Twilo a legendary club. |

I'm not a 'Miami folk' and live in the Tampa/Orlando area and have seen JVM spin headliner and opening sets for 7+ years now and he is always garbage. So ing boring. I would hardly call his set on Sat night as a "true atmospheric Progressive set" more like cliche minimal boring house. Everyone has their opinion and I am simply stating mine. Sasha get a new opener!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is all

lol.
I didn't get to hear him thankfully but omg did that guy ever make this JvM thing a big deal.
He's boring to some not boring to all. Every opener should get the crowd ready and bumping for the MAIN act. Not boring or slow just so the main act can bang it out. half the time the main act doesn't get there till right before he goes on.
Take lessons from dj's like Edgar V. He opens AND closes it proper all the time. ;) |

Jimmy was horrible, he would play one decent tune followed by three horrible ones. I had never listened to the guy before and had no idea what to expect. But I will definetly never see a show with him again, and Sasha did not mean that much to me either. He really did not wow me at all. So in reality it was a fairly mediocre night. Was hoping the night would keep you moving non stop. But the hole time Space was literally dark, not so many only like two huge breakdowns form what I remember, I got to a point were I stopped using my drink passes because Sasha wasnt worth it anymore!!! And tooooo many wasted people... |

I cant beleive i missed Xpander on the terrace... :eyes:
Whatever all I can say is had it not been for the mere fact that I got there at 11 nd had to wait until 3 to actually hear some banging tunes, I would have stayed. Sasha was great but I guess I was discouraged at the fact that I had to wait out 4 hours of JvM's garbage. Regardless of what anyone has to say about him. When your opening up for a big name like sasha I would want to hear tunes that get me pumped, excited, anxious, to hear what an even biger name would put down. But all JvM did to me was make me sad. Still though...I cant wait for Sharam... |

I'm glad someone brought up Edgar V. b/c JVM has been spinning for almost as long as Edgar, and both DJs know how to properly warm up the headlining DJ. Edgar throws some good House music, and Jimmy plays Atmpspheric Progressive music.
Edgar's opening sets can be fairly bangin b/c PVD's sets tend to stay on a fairly high BPM note.
Sasha on the other hand rarely ever goes beyond the 132 BPM mark, and these days a lot of times plays even slower than that. As such, you need the right DJ to warm you up. The two best DJs I've seen do that have been Sean Cusick, and Jimmy Van M.
Thinking back to the Delta Heavy tour from a few years ago, it was the opening set from Jimmy Van M that made the biggest impression on me. I also remember a year later seeing Jimmy Van M headline at Icon in Orlando, and I didn't think it was boring at all.
And I know there's quite a few people around conference time that enjoy his sets. |

| well i will make this short cause it isn't parallel with most on this board. JVM was awesome, exactly the type of i was looking to hear from a mind of a scientist he is. HIS JOB IS NOT TO BLOW UP THE ROOM...he is supposed to provide a CHILL intro to the main event, therefore he did a great job, and the last 30-40 mins of his set was hard and a good indication that Sasha was there and it was about to go down. Sasha as always ripped it up with his slow prog builds for the first hour or so then about 4:30 or so it went down! like BOOM, from then till 6:30 when he stopped one big crazy long record full of monster tracks. I loved every minute of it, he is still the man. As far as the terrace, it was good but like i said it would be hard to top mainroom and didn't. Greece 2k was mad cool, as well as lucky heather, such a great track. pete heller- simpler was one of my faves of the nite along with pryda- remmeebr because anything int he pryda guise is the best out. i will definitely not miss Sasha this WMC after this set. |

Right on RzO :)
DaHippieman, I remember your reviews from when I lived in Tampa and Orlando. You usually made it out to all the good/quality events, so we're usually on the same page musically.
like I said, Jimmy can be an acquired taste, but like RzO said (and this is what I believe) his sets are great minds. |

I like all genres of edm and I agree with the fact that the warm up DJ is basically there to "warm up" and not bang it but JVM has never done it for me. All DJ's can be hit and miss and I've seen JVM @ Icon, various other clubs, and that classic gig @ Hard Rock with Sasha and Digweed and I know a lot of house peeps that dig him he's just not melodic enough for me. |
