my best advice is to become an accomplished cook.

if you know what you're doing with the knives and the fire, you can always put something good together with just the bare minimum.

a few basic rules of cooking...

starches will always fill you up

sauces make the starches taste good

veggies are usually cheap

when using meat, use all of it. make a stock from the undesireables (to go in your sauces) and use the good stuff sparingly.

always think about where the "scraps" of today's meal preparation can be used in another meal ;)

- tuna salad... boil some rice/macaroni put a can of tuna in and add ranch dressing mix it up (add onion if you like it)
- cottage cheese and green onions on toasted bread
- avoid sugar food that way you wont keep eating more and more

i just now invented something based on what i had in my cabinet and it's not half bad

2 cans shredded chicken in water
can of sweet corn
can of cream of celery soup (98% fat free kind)
1/2 cup shredded cheese
salt
pepper
seasonings (i used a spicy blend)

drain excess water and cook 2 cans chicken on skillet while simultaneously heating corn in a medium saucepan.
add salt and pepper to the chicken as it cooks, it will absorb the flavors better
once chicken is no longer pink, add can of soup and cheese
drain corn and then add that too
stir it all up
salt and pepper and seasonings to taste
voila

insta pot pie filling, minus the high fat content...it's pretty good on its own!!

You have to make your own food to really get a good bang for the buck. There has been alot of lazy prepackaged stuff thats been suggested but its still not worth it ( as good as it is).

Like that lasagne (sp)is a good idea....you dont have to eat it all for the next 3 days, freeze some of it for next week.

Use frozen veggies to "pimp" you ramen and rice.

I buy a big bag of chicken breasts and cook up four breasts at a time...
I only use one at the time and cut/shread up the other three for later use and freeze it. Once its shreaded you can add it in anything and it already cooked/cut. It helps cut down on prep time. Canned chili ( I use stagg ) and add it in with some bbq sause to thicken it up, or a stirfry using the frozen veggies, add it to ramen (I use thai noodles its alot healthier) rice and frozen veggies, or just slap it between bread and toss a slice of pepper jack on it.

Buy stuff that can be used in a number of dishes and if you can buy it in bulk. Get a good stock of spices and you can make alot of "boring" dishes a ton better.

If you buy rice, hit up an asian store and get a big bag. Its pretty universal. Its not too nutritious but easy and cheap...get a brown rice to get some kinda "healthy" element out of it.

Cous Cous, raisins, soy nuts or whichever nuts you like. :p

Fruit Salad

Chicken cutlet + caesar salad

Chicken cutlet + sauce (honey, lemon, shredded garlic, red wine)

Breaded cutlet

Romaine + standard lettuce + honey roasted walnuts & dried cranberries

Ill post more as i come up with it. Im trying to stay away from all the canned . This stuff takes 5 mins to make and, will cost like $10-15 bucks a week and will last the week.

If you can find an ethnic market (especially one catering to Arab/Indian food) you can get good quality food really inexpensively. And you don't get any of that processed crap.

Tostadas....

Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Lettuce
Tomatoes
Salsa
Taco Bell Tostada's (the ones in the box)

heat in microwave for 30 seconds, and your set. Easy to make and healthy.

Nachos

Pretty much the same as the Tostada's except for Tortilla Chips instead.
