Tiger is way better than XP... that may change with Vista, but microsoft is always following the inovative design of apple..
You can use a two button mouse btw. i use one.
They're powerful machines and if you use your laptop for anything other than spreadsheets and word docs (which they do have all of that, I have the microsoft office suite for apple) then apple is the way to go..
I'm a recent convert (bought a macbook pro 3 months ago), but I would never advise someone to get anything other than an apple again. |
ok... maybe i just dont get it b/c I only use my PC for holding pictures, music and power point is probably teh biggest program i use... i dont dj or play any computer games... ive had my gateway laptop 3 years and never had a virus
that youtube window switching thing did look cool, but i rarely have anything more than a webpage and aim on at once... maybe if im daring ill have a power point going too...
i see that an apple looks cool but does it do anything that a PC doesnt?... why would somebody switch? |

Now I see everyone is on about what a mac can do that a pc can't. How about we start with this first, WHAT A MAC CANT DO THAT A PC CAN!
Ok I'm a pc user, have been always will be, and I'm big on using PCs for business since it is the field that i am currently employed in.
I was hesitant in purchasing a mac but i took the step anyways, the way I figured it, if I plan on making a career out of computers, I have to atleast roll with the industry, even enough to navigate myself around a mac or interface one on a network where ever my career takes me. It's evident that the industry has a place for these machines and I am beginning to see why.
Ok circling back to what a MAC can't do that a PC does really well. Now I'm sure some mac users will come on here and start pwning me, but from what I've seen and heard, macs do a horrible job translating fonts, so using a MS application like excel, word, power point, access, outlook, etc all those applications that are used in the professional business field, are pretty much non-existent on a mac. Reason being is unlike a PC, font packages are not uniform through out unless it's file is contained within an image. So for example if you use Word to write a letter in Verdana and you send it to another mac that doesn't have Verdana, the font will look jumbled. So I look at it as a lateral platform which has a bunch of attributes, where a PC is a vertical platform with all the same attributes. did i confuse you?
Anyways, the system approach is pretty simple, alittle too simple for me because personally I'm an organizing freak, I keep my files organized in a file folder structure which helps me understand what and where my files are and the reasons why they are there. Where as a mac, file placement and structure isn't important because it's governed by an application. More like download anywhere but import into itunes library. I dislike this only because you are FORCED to use/associate certain file types with single applications. Meaning itunes is the ONLY player to play your music files because you have the slighest clue as to where on the hard drive it's stored. From a MAC point of view, it's like why would you need to know where the file is when you can look in the application and find it in there. That begs the question, what if I don't want to use that application to govern my files, what if I want to use winamp instead. It's a PRO point of view for users who aren't as computer savy as most of us but to those who are, to those who worry about file placement and organization, it's a horrible restriction.
Let's go the other way, MAC applications on a PC. Tell me, why is it everytime I install QUICKTIME on my PC, it tries to take it over? Meaning it associates ALL my file types to be used by a quicktime, that pisses me off! Because I'm a PC user thats why, I want that flexibility, i want all those available application options, i don't want to be confined to 1 program to govern everything.
So far my theory has proven true, pc users naturally prefer flexibility because there's a bunch of similar applications out there, where as with mac, there isn't as much application development for it's simplistic approach. here's a program that will organize for you, you don't have to worry about the file structures and file names we can do that for you as long as you stay within our application.

Well that's been my outlook so far, maybe it'll change and develop as I continue on my quest to learning how the mac functionally works. |

^^^ I would read all of that but it's entirely too long at this hour. My mom used to have an IBM Thinkpad (I forget which one but it was good), but it got stolen. I ing loved that thing. Soooooo much fun to use. She got a MacBook to replace that one. Yeah, it's stable but there's something about the Thinkpad that I like better (maybe because it was smaller and lighter). However, I was a Mac user but converted to PC so I might be a little biased to the Thinkpad.

there are definitely individual advantages to mac OS and windows OS. some more mac being that its more stable, rarely crashes, just overall a better written program, very good music software (for what i do). windows: you can look inside the computer, at the registry, inside pretty much every single folder/file, (many more).
which leads me to this.... the main reason from this point on why i'm gonna go mac is the simple fact that i can install the mac OS and windows os on the same computer. when i want to work on my music with logic pro 7, i'll load up the mac os. if i'm feeling the need to play some pc games, then i'll open up windows. simple as that... you get both options with one computer. now a lot of people don't need their computer running both platforms simply cuz they use it for surfing web and whatnot, but for someone like me who's very much into computers, mac is definitely the way to go. :) |

its for any of the new macs that run the intel chip.
as for the networking part.... i never really tried networking a mac before... but i can ask my sister whats up. |

your arguement only solidifies my love for the PC... the Obssessive/Compulsive style that the PC allows you to maintain would make me happier that that i have a control on the comptuer and not the computer telling me what to do and how to run things...
but they look so cool... (short of the one button mouse :D)
Brian... keep up the updates... nice one :) i truely want to be convinced that the mac is better,.. and since you are a PC lover and now own a mac your opinion means most b/c you you have an invested interest in both, unlike the only mac owners who dont give contructive criticism b/c they dont see both sides... |

i have a two button wireless logictech mouse and I love it.
Well here's my reasoning for purchasing a mac
1-It's going to do all the things you say you need it to do
2-It's a bit more portable then say a pc laptop with its 13.3 where as I don't need 15 or more if I'm mobile.
3-Dont need to worry about spyware or viruses especially since i'll be surfing the net alot
4-it comes with a built in camera and a remote control for my dvd player, not that i need either or but it was a good bonus
5-It's a bit different yet still looks the same (thats why I went black instead of white).
Things that I needed to use it for
Playing music, surfing the web, watching dvds, downloading pictures from my digi cam, downloading videos from my digi cam, downloading PSP games which I think might be a connectivity issue since some of the PSP homebrew software is windows only ran - solved via BootCamp / WinXP Parallel.
I want a more simplistic approach to managing my business contacts and address book, Outlook on PC is just not flexible, so I think if I go the TREO/PDA route, there are better/simpler programs that can synch and manage my business contacts. |

Sorry Brian to buI have found OSX is a much more flexible and customizable OS. The only thing lacking on the mac side is CPU/Memory overclocks. I have found ways to OC the graphics card though. Just like a windows box you can choose what applications associate with what files. Also if you go into the prefs in itunes you can turn off its automatic file organization. And if you must use a alternative program to play music there are 2 main options Mplayer and VLC. But for me someone who has been making(or attempting to make) music for the past 5 years on mac, itunes mp3 conversion algo sounds better than the latest lame(though you loose a few options(which still keeps me using lame for certain task).
And for mac applications on PC. It goes the same for all programs they will try and associate with as many files as possible so that your using "their" program. I havent seen a program yet that doesnt try and do this.
And I know you know how much of a computer freak I am whether it be on the mac or pc front I use both and know the OS's inside and out. I think i mentioned it before, mac OSX slays windows in every way, memory management, meta data, terminal access etc. Hopefully vista will have more to offer. |
