If anyone is insulted by a Merry Christmas, they might as well go back to wherever, because Canada, and more precisely Toronto is so multicultural that they would never get away from all religious rituals and cultural traits. |

the way I see it - you don't like christmas trees, SUCK IT UP! use your own festive/religious decorations within your own home, don't imposed it on the rest of the society
you are NOT back in your own country, why do ppl like that feel they have a right to behave like this? North America's predominant religion is Christianity, why do we suddenly have to try to fit for everyone's liking?! |
I find it funny that you say "use your own festive/religious decorations within your own home, don't imposed it on the rest of the society". Why doesn't this ideal apply to christians celebrating Christmas? Just because they are the majority doesn't mean they should be shoving their beliefs down my throat, or anyone else who isn't christian. If you go by what you just said, there should be no signs of religious representation anywhere.
Why do you people assume that people of different religion are from another country. I think a lot of you are totally misguided in that sense.
Plenty of people all throughout the United States and Canada who practice different religions are more American/Canadian than some of us.
I personally think it is silly that Christmas Trees are being called Holiday Trees, however, I do think that it is important for us as a society to recognize that, although christians may be the majority, there is more going on than the Christmas celebration this time of year.
It's a matter of respect. In my opinion, we should show an equal amount of respect to other religions celebrating their beliefs if we choose to show homage to another. Especially where people of all religions and races obviously gather (like an airport).
At this point, I think in the interest of being "politically correct", we have been more disrespectful to everyone in general. Everything is just getting out of hand, and is becoming completely stupid. |

To clarify my point, you wouldn't walk up to a black man and say "what was living in africa like?"
You are making a generalization based on where the person lives, their colour/ etc.
So why would you walk up to a person and say "Merry Christmas"? That is making an assumption that they are christian, and are invested in those beliefs.
I can understand why non-christians would be irritated, but at the same time, I think that there should be an understanding amongst those that are not followers of the christian sect, that the majority in the western society is, and when people say "Merry Christmas", they mean it a nice way, not offensively.
So, non-christians need to relax, and the rest of us need to be considerate of their beliefs as well. |

Wrong. For the simple fact that christmas is part of this country's traditions and heritage. So whats next? banning O canada because it might offend foreigners? Banning references to the queen because people from former british colonies get offended? (this was actually tried in court btw).
If you dont like this country;s traditions, dont come here. The majority celebrates christmas whether its in a religious way or a traditions based way. I would never even dream of going to a muslim country and demanding that a restaurant open during ramadan to satisfy my needs. And there ARE a significant number of christians who live in most muslim countries BTW. |

I'm confused at your response. Can you clarify what was "wrong" about my post? |

Oh I wasn't saying I believe that, I was just saying based off of the sentence of Funky's that I quoted at the beginning of that paragraph, that logic stands. |

because we are in Canada, and I think for the past what, 2 centuries the main religion here was Christianity...nothing wrong with that! what does it suddenly become "showing believes down the throat"? if you are offended by christmas trees, then something is wrong with your believes, because if you are a true believer NOTHING else should matter, believes wouldn't bridge with politics and political correctness... if believes drive one to start suing left and right and claiming stuff, than that person is just using religion for personal benefits |
