"into the music for the music"... that's the dumbest thing i've heard. as opposed to into the music for the drugs? lol people do drugs for the effect of the drug, not for the music :wtf:

this is an interesting question because even a really really heavy drug user or addict can be in the scene first and foremost for the music.

I am DEFINITELY a fan of the music and the Scene (which often gets overlooked as a crucial component of things) before anything else, and if I didn't like the music or if I felt anything but welcome in the scene then nothing else would matter. I also love being OUT, with the music loud and mixed, love meeting other people who love the music and the scene as much as I do.

In the end, it's a personal choice. Some people don't feel the need, others prefer the way they feel/enjoy the music while sober. Other people like to get drunk or high, or just buzzed, or totally ed on god knows what.

Personally I enjoy a mix of both, depending on the night and where I am and what's going on. Since I've left the strictures of the military service (and the fairly routine drug tests that it entails), I've spent about an equal number of nights out sober or having only 1-2 drinks as I've had nights intoxicated. I've definitely had nights where I've been utterly wasted, nights I've been high as a kite on a variety of different drugs, but not every time, nor am I dependant on it to have a good time. I don't see the point in taking pride in being substance free, nor would I brag about taking drugs, it's just what you enjoy at the time without unduly interfering with other people's ability to enjoy themselves. With or without drugs, I'll have a good time if the music's good and the people friendly.

And as an example: If I went out to see Danny Howells one night (which I NEED to do), I'd probably smoke or take something else that night, not because I need the drugs for Howells to be good (quite the contrary, he kicks ass regardless) but more because they just go well together, his particular style and the atmosphere he creates and drugs. Drugs are never the point in and of themselves, but sometimes they just go really well with what's happening anyway. Which is to say again: it's not mutually exclusive to be into EDM mostly for the music and to take drugs.

First and Foremost, what's important and a large part of what keeps the electronic scene, both mainstream and underground, the awesomely free atmosphere that it is: Let people make choices for themselves, and don't judge them just because they do something differently than you. We're all adults here, the scene is built on the freedom of the individual and respect for others.

Never done drugs either. I'm usually totally sober when I go out. If I drink at all, 3 is usually my max.

I don't drink, smoke or do drugs. Too busy taking pictures to do all that! I'll let all the other photogs get drunk and miss good pics :)

Ironically, I don't really enjoy the music in clubs too much. I prefer listening to the original, full unmixed tracks at home. Don't like mixes at all, so I don't really care what any DJ is playing unless I hear a track I know.

I couldn't do photography in a scenery that I didn't enjoy. How do you do it. ;p
