Quality post! :thumbsup :)

oh yeah by no means would I ever judge someone for staying sober. It's just easy for people touting "drug-free-ness" to come across as judgemental. I don't think that was the intent here, if I was interpreted as accusing the original poster or anyone else of such then I apologize.

this isn't really a question I"d have thought of to ask cause, well, I couldn't care less whether you're sober or not.

I also find it hilarious that people would be "into the music for the drugs," that just makes no sense.

I couldn't do photography in a scenery that I didn't enjoy. How do you do it. ;p

It's tough...like when there is a heavy techno night at Avalon, I almost lose it. I just try to block out the music and concentrate on the photography. As long as I am busy getting a good shot or looking for people to photograph, I usually don't hear the music.

The bigger question I have is why do you choose to go do it. Why not do photography in another area...an area you enjoy :P ...

It's like someone going to E3 on their own accord to cover the event (as in, they don't work for CNN just to be assigned to do a story on E3...I mean completely going on your own) but they don't care about videogames.

I find your situation weird/confusing...why are you on an EDM board? To find out about events you aren't exactly interested in but still take pictures at? :conf:

same for me as for some other people.
i enjoyed edm in the beginning just because the music was so ethereal. like nothing i've ever heard! and i listen to it everyday. :D i get a natural high just from listening to it on its own.

i only started drinking last year and starting taking drugs socially about 6 months ago. i'm still a newbie at everything, but i think drugs can 'enhance' the experience if done correctly. (i guess i'm going through my experimental phase right now. somewhat of a late bloomer.)

like everything else though, taking drugs is a risk to your health and brain. so i try to do it sparingly, or when i know it'll just make the event so much funner.

what i noticed though over time is that taking drugs at musical events starts to sometimes be more about the drugs and the feelings associated with it, as opposed to going there *just* for the music. it's give and take...

I like to remember what I heard, so I usually just stick to alcohol and or weed.

I got into the music before the drugs.

I listen to the music daily without any drugs. Does drugs make it more fun? Probably :D

is there anyone out there lol or am i a ..blacksheep?..

You're not alone. :) I've been partying sober since I was 13 years old!

simply put i was not trying to affend anyone by what i said i only started this thread so "I" could find people to relate to. i grew up around friends who were always into drugs and watched it take an huge bad effect on theres lives i always felt comfortable stering away from them. "this is a personal thing" and for the peps who listen to edm and do drugs thats your choice, everyone has choices in life do it if it makes you happy (:
peace and love

this is an interesting question because even a really really heavy drug user or addict can be in the scene first and foremost for the music.

I am DEFINITELY a fan of the music and the Scene (which often gets overlooked as a crucial component of things) before anything else, and if I didn't like the music or if I felt anything but welcome in the scene then nothing else would matter. I also love being OUT, with the music loud and mixed, love meeting other people who love the music and the scene as much as I do.

In the end, it's a personal choice. Some people don't feel the need, others prefer the way they feel/enjoy the music while sober. Other people like to get drunk or high, or just buzzed, or totally ed on god knows what.

Personally I enjoy a mix of both, depending on the night and where I am and what's going on. Since I've left the strictures of the military service (and the fairly routine drug tests that it entails), I've spent about an equal number of nights out sober or having only 1-2 drinks as I've had nights intoxicated. I've definitely had nights where I've been utterly wasted, nights I've been high as a kite on a variety of different drugs, but not every time, nor am I dependant on it to have a good time. I don't see the point in taking pride in being substance free, nor would I brag about taking drugs, it's just what you enjoy at the time without unduly interfering with other people's ability to enjoy themselves. With or without drugs, I'll have a good time if the music's good and the people friendly.

And as an example: If I went out to see Danny Howells one night (which I NEED to do), I'd probably smoke or take something else that night, not because I need the drugs for Howells to be good (quite the contrary, he kicks ass regardless) but more because they just go well together, his particular style and the atmosphere he creates and drugs. Drugs are never the point in and of themselves, but sometimes they just go really well with what's happening anyway. Which is to say again: it's not mutually exclusive to be into EDM mostly for the music and to take drugs.

I realize that I am a tad late on this thread/topic; I simply wanted to say that I consider your comment to be very well written and articulated. I believe that you establish some noteworthy points and fairly represent two different possibilities of opinions. To phrase it somewhat differently, your response is very interesting, thorough, and informative--great post! :D:D:D:D:D
