I use both. Text messaging during the day because I know a lot of people who don't want to use up their minutes. Phone calls during the night because most people have free night minutes. |

i primarily text, and for one big reason. I absolutely hate the culture thats been built around cell phones. when someone calls, they expect you to answer. and if they don't pick up, chances are they call again. well what if they don't feel like talking?
yeah i screen my calls, to the point where i actually answer very few calls. if i don't feel like talking to someone, i won't answer a call from them. period.
text messages, however, don't hold the same stigma
if someone sends me a text and i don't respond immediately, w/e.
basically, by carrying a cell phone around so i can have it handy, i don't want to feel obliged to take time out of my day to respond to anyone the second they have a question |

Well i would argue that the culture of SMS/texting that's developed over the past few years has removed the personal nature from social interaction (similar to email). if you don't want to talk, don't pick up. it's that simple. sending a someone a text coz u don't have the balls to talk to someone (even if it's something silly) is really sad. I know, coz I'm guilty of it.
NOTHING is as good as hearing a friend's voice, a quick "how are you doing", etc that was common during the 90's. If you don't have a few mins spare to talk to your friends, are you really a friend?
With all this technology you'd think we'd get closer, but no it's allowing us to get more distant. |

gmail works just fine for me
depends on what their provider is, but for verizon you can send an email to [theirnumber]@vtext.com and it'll come through their phone |

It isn't that people don't have the balls to talk on the phone. In my case I just don't like talking on the phone period. I talk to my family and my two best friends in the world on the phone exclusively. Everyone else I prefer to text. I find being on the phone a waste of time because it hinders my ability to multi-task and when I am on the phone I'm not paying that much attention because I'm generally doing other things when I'm talking. If I'm going to talk to people I prefer it to be face to face rather than on the phone. |
