I have nothing wrong with other symbols going up. But just because we are multicultural doesnt mean we should have to take anything down. According to the 2001 census 77% of canadians are christian, 16% declare no faith, 2% muslim, 1% jewish, hindu, sikh, and buddist. Thats actually a lot higher than i thought of christian. I guess im just not taking rural or small town canada into accoutn

EXACTLY. This country was founded by Christians. Multiculturalism is a beautiful thing and part of what makes Canada special is the fact that we welcome others with open arms to contribute to society.

This country has never asked anyone from other religions or cultures to stop being who they are or stop practising their faiths/cultures. It is UNFAIR for people to come here and ask us to stop being who WE are. Does the thought of moving to Isreal and getting offended when people say Happy Hanukkah or moving to Egypt and getting mad when people say Happy Ramadan sound stupid? It should, because it is. And it shouldn't be any different here. We're notorious for protecting the rights of everyone else but our own.

I can hardly believe that cutting a tree is part of religion since i dont think there were fancy decorations, lights or even much trees in middle east 2000 years ago where it was the center of the world for religions.

Offended by chrismas trees; of course not.

But cutting trees would make forest in another country for a tradition going on a few hundred years; NO (as in should not be done)

Government cutting trees and putting up in governement placeses in secular and green loving country; NO also (as in should not be done)

Cutting trees to entertaning your kids for a few days; i guess its ok.

But make them believe if they where good whole year long they will get couple boxes under a tree; NO, sorry but lame. Just put me on naughty list.

The government is supposed to be a non-demoninational entity. Church and state are theoretically separate in Canada.

exactly Dennis, bang on!

people who say the opposite completely misunderstand what multiculturalism is all about

Personally, I'm not offended, but I think as the government of a multicultural country where only a fraction of people are actually christian and see Christmas as a christian holiday instead of just a warm and fuzzy time of year with a couple of days off work, they need to remain impartial.

Canada has a large jewish population, why don't we see the star of david in airports?

Private business can do what they wish - they are only alienating potential customers of a non-christian faith - but the government has a higher responsibility to be impartial on religious issues.

there is this god awful eyesore of a manorah at queen's park. it's the only symbol i see, even tho i am sure all the lovely christmas symbols there.

also by your logic, there should be no time off for anyone at christmas either.

You're right... which is why we have Hindus, Jews and all other religions represented in Parliment. But to Margs' point a tree isn't necessarily a religious symbol. If we were talking about an advent wreath, yes. Tree, I'd say no.

I'm more or less referring to the train of thought that it's inappropriate to say Merry Christmas and to celebrate the holiday in a macro sense. It is a Canadian custom as far as I'm concerned.

what do you guys consider truly christian symbols of christmas?

for me:
lamb (lamb of god)
baby jesus (nativity scene)
star of bethlehem

everything else is just made up by society to make some money.

beefy k
heck, i'm afraid of crosses!
