I made a muzak!

First, let me just say this is straight up, unadulterated, RJT-is-kind-of-excited-so-he's-spamming-MWTA kind of post - but I made this fluffy little proggy breaky number and thought I'd share it with you all so you can all tell me how bad it is ;)

Blake Jarrell - Thumpie (Rob Turner's Undersea Manatee Mix) [Right Click and "Save As"]

I really have to say thank you to both Charley and Blake for their help - without which this would never have been even remotely possible. Both you guys provided the raw materials for me to work with, without which I probably never would have gotten the spark to teach myself a little about Ableton this winter break. Thanks a ton - I've had loads of fun :)

So yeah - feel free to criticize/speak your mind, it's the only way I'll get any better.

Cheers,

Rob

Nice to see you getting into production dude! Great first effort, add some more spatial imaging and it will be even better.

Sounded pretty good. Definitely not a bad place to start. I'd throw some ideas your way but I can't produce for . The only advice I can give is to keep working on it and experimenting until you're 100% satisfied, but thats almost a given.

nice atmospheric breaks!

my main grievance is during the breaks at 1:40 and 3:30, the hi-hats are a bit loud and could be toned down a bit.. seemed a bit too overpowering. (i guess the same applies to other parts of the track, but those 2 parts stood out the most)

i like it though, keep up the good work!

yea i was gonna say that too - give the main open hat a rest during the breaks.
Porky
yea, highhats at 1:40 stand out too much, and it's a bit repetitive at 5:40 mark

but, a good first effort! i know i can't produce/remix , so it's good seeing others trying to create.

:)

so, i dunno what hi-hats are, but if that is referring to the symbol sound that persists throughout the beginning of the song, i think maybe tinkering with that a bit in terms of pitch and loudness and maybe adding some additional sounds in the background may add some body to it all, i wanted it to move and it just stayed the same for awhile, but once the beats kicked in again, the rest of the song was really smooth....i liked it man. Send me an update when you are finished with the second draft. Cheers.:gsmile:

I agree with the high hat at those points. Otherwise I like the feel.
dubblies
are high hats symbol sounds? p.s. I am not a producer
RJT
Thanks for the thoughts guys :)

Dubb's - The high hats are the cymbal sounds you're referring to, and as of yesterday, they're gone ;)

I'm working out some new percussive lines and trying to sort out getting some of the vst's from my desktop onto my laptop (I only have Live 4 on my desktop, but have no discs/anything for any of the VST's I have :() so I can rewrite the little synth towards the end and perhaps sort out a fattened up bassline. We'll see, I'm still such a n00b. :p

If anyone is interested, I'll keep you updated on progress. Again, thanks for your thoughts - I'm trying to learn all I can right now, so any help is appreciated beyond words.

:)

it sounds good rob. especially for a first production. i gotta agree with everyone else though, the offbeat hats during the breakdowns is kinda annoying. perhaps use a different sample?? all of the pads you use gives it an "ambient" feel i guess, so i'd also like to hear some sort of percussive bassline to back up the beats. the snare also sounds "dry" in a sense, perhaps a little bit of echo or delay would fill out the sound a little more? what are you using vst/program-wise?
RJT
I threw a filter onto the main drums section to chill it out, and I'm trying to find a different percussive line for the high's - I've tried a couple different things with some congas, but it's just coming up a bit muddy right now.

I'm working in Ableton Live 5, I've got a fair amount of effects plugins but basically no VSTi's on my laptop, so I'm trying to track down some free VSTi's for Mac right now :)
