Listen boys, I am not a big Beckham fan - Gerrard is my man without hesitation - all I was saying (and will continue to say) is that we all got to start somewhere - the quality of the football played in Stoke-on-Trent isn't wonderful, let me tell you but it is what I grew to love as a girl. I am happy that we have a football team and I will support them to the end. Beckham's profile is great for the league's profile and exposure and let's face it, you only get great football when there is $$ involved and you only get $$ when fans are involved and you only get fans when either you win games (obviously the Leafs is not included in this statement) or when there are high profile people involved in the league.....
Stop bitching and be grateful that in 10 years, we may get to see some decent footy in this city. The Americans just keep getting better and better.... who knows what could happen????? |

But they are living legends of the game...Beckham is just
Zidane and Figo were the best players on their respective teams at the WC...they carried their teams with their leadership...they didn't puke and quit on the field then cry about it like a little bitch on the bench |

You can make a comparison to Beckham being the Tiesto of Football - brilliant earlier on in his career but now a player out of form but brilliantly marketed to keep his superstar status shining.
But screw all that, he was the captain of the english team for 6 years which is probably the most high pressure responsibility in football today (second to being the manager of england ofcourse) and on top of that hes not let his celebrity status get to his head, being a goodwill ambassador to UNICEF's sporting development program and also a family oriented person who fiercely protects the privacy of his kids from the tabloids.
And besides, hes a proud member of United's famed class of '92 and thats enough for me never to doubt his credentials and hope he does well for the galaxy and goes out with a bang. |

I agree his time is coming to a close but you can't take away that he was probably the best player ever at striking that ball. He left so many goal tenders looking stupid and frozen. I will go watch him play. |

Rofl at quote "Tiesto of football" that was funny... and other post that Zidane didn't quit on his team - that was foolish.
It will be nice to sit outdoors and watch a game at the new fan friendly stadium.. what other options are there? Baseball is boring (except World Series) and the Argos keep playing their games with the roof up. |

TORONTO (Reuters) - David Beckham's signing with the Los Angeles Galaxy sent shivers of excitement through hockey-mad Canada on Thursday, triggering a spike in season tickets sales for a soccer team that have yet to play a game.
Within hours of announcement that Beckham had joined the Galaxy in a $250 million deal, Toronto FC said they had received hundreds of calls and sold 100 season ticket packages.
"The phone is already ringing off the hook, we've had over 500 calls this morning and sold another 100 season tickets," said Tom Anselmi, the vice president and chief operating officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), owners of Toronto
FC.
"There are very few players out there like David Beckham -- Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, he's in that kind of class. It's great for the league.
"It's really great for the overall profile of the league and the overall credibility of Major League Soccer."
With Toronto sports scene dominated by the NHL's Maple Leafs and NBA's Raptors, Beckham's signing brought timely attention to the city's side as they prepare for their inaugural season.
Toronto FC will play home games at a 20,000-seat purpose built soccer stadium that will host the final of the Under-20 FIFA World Cup later this year and can now look forward to at least one assured sellout.
After the MLS schedule is released in two weeks, individual game tickets will go on sale and the Los Angeles game is expected to be an immediate sellout.
"It (Beckham's signing) is the type of thing that grabs the attention of everybody," Anselmi told reporters. "It's huge news for the league because he is that type of player.
"LA is going to be a better team and they're going to sell a lot of tickets in every town they're in. He is more than just a player. He's more than that. He's a sporting icon and a marketing icon."
