I think there's gonna be a difference of opinion from those posting from Europe (or other fans from futbol loving countries)...and those from the U.S. Most of my friends didn't even know what MLS was before the news broke and they were suddenly talking about the sport for the first time. Although I think the world cup had a surprising amount of interest when I was living in NY, I think there's potential for more here. As an American who likes futbol, I'm eager for anything to help grow the sport.
Pele, Beckenbauer, and Chinaglia were obviously better players than Beckham but not as good as marketing the game at that time. Pele later become an ambassador but still my 14 year nephew (who plays futbol here) has no idea who he is. No matter if you like the guy, Becks is marketing machine. People say on here.."well he's not that good looking, he looks gay" Well I personally won't disagree but that's not really the consensus from women around the world. His popularity speaks for itself. This is turn has always made him overrated as a player. We get that.
You can say that the aging stars has been tried in the past here but futbol has grown in popularity here since 1978, 1985, or whatever. Any futbol news in this country is good news. My dream is that futbol will become the 4th most popular sport here as opposed to just an afterthought. |

Yank kids play a lot of footy. It's just most don't play after junior high.
Becks will motivate them to actually pursue the game a bit further.
And there are helluva a lot of Yanks.
Add a few good youth coaches and US can be as good as any footy nation in the world. (Maybe within 10 yrs) |

great point...
I'm sending my kid to Becks' academy.....ahem, if I ever make enough money to afford that ...
its just so tough with American Football, Baseball, and Basketball.... all our athletes are ate up by them, because theres no money in USA Soccer... if we had just Soccer, we'd have the best soccer team in the world... no one would be able to compete with us! |

I thought his contract was 5 years/$250 million? Regardless, $125 mil over 5 years is still rediculous.
I don't know what kind of attendance or TV audience they get, but I'm still surprised that a team could afford that kind of deal.
Will he give a full effort or will he just prance around and play half-assed, take a couple nice free kicks, and roll around in his money? |
