And also, any remotely educated person knows that the conflict is because of the resentment from the independance war more than 15 years ago. I mean, how does someone miss one of the biggest news stories of that time? That's like not knowing that the US invaded (liberated?) Iraq

The tension between Croatia and Serbia goes much further back than that. The war was an effect, not the cause. I thought most remotely educated people would know that.

Thanks Captain Obvious. We all know war's just happen out of thin air and countries decide they want to be independent at the drop of a hat with no previous feelings on it

What I was pointing out, that you clearly missed, is that conflict between the two isn't because of resentment from the war as you claimed. It goes much deeper than that, and would still be there whether a war had taken place or not.

Yes I'm well aware of that. I did go through the war and grew up there you know ;)
Still, the war is a MAJOR reason for the hostility, not a minor reason.
Paulie
Feelingbveryweird you will find that the 15 year olds at the tennis wouldnt have a clue to the history of their countries prior to the war.
MiSSyM
they weren't even probably born.

uneducated fools.

sad thing is, is that some or most of the hate & hostility & bull is being fed down to them by their parents, etc.

Fair enough ;) And yeah I'm not trying to suggest the war is a minor issue, I'd definately be fighting a losing battle with that line of argument.

Paulie - you'd find they wouldn't have much clue about the war itself either if they are 16 year olds. But people do tend to read up/get taught about the recent history of their own countries you know, and prejudices are passed down like missym said.

Fledz
The passing down of prejudices is a big problem in the Balkan countries. That's why you get lots of people that spew all the time and have this deep hate for another country, when they don't even know what the they are talking about. They just echo what their overly patriotic and moronic parents/grandparents/uncles/cousins etc say. It's dying down a bit now as the people with the most hate are getting older and the newer kids don't really care for their hatred, but as you can see it still very much exists, and is equally bad on both sides.

I believe that as someone who moved away as a child but still kept in contact with people and visit there all the time, I have possibly a better view on the whole problem between the nations. I'm still amazed at what some of the people there say about Serbs when I go and visit (and I visit regularly). It's amazing how much some people are like sheep and just soak up all the hatred. The other Croats reading this will know what "Soli pamet" means and that explains it perfectly. I would bet my life that it's the same thing in Serbia too.

Plenty of people have got over it, but plenty won't. They just can't accept change. Plus, there will always be idiots in the world, we just have to learn to deal with them.
Xavier
those sixteen year old junior Australian chetniks/ustashes get their history from wikipedia, their red star belgrade, dinamo zagreb paraphernalia from ebay and then they learn the songs/chants off youtube.
