Daniel Kandi - Nova
sounds like the usual Anjunabeats fluffy trance but the melody is very nice
I kind of agree with Arksun - Arisen. Good melody and production. But it's so ing epic, that kind of ruins it for me. |

Most would say both but in the end of the day is the melody (the music) that affects. Production-wise, most pre-millenium epic-trance tunes were terrible, IMO not only in comparison to todays standards, back to pre-millenium ones as well. One has to listen to Agnelli & Nelson's "El-Nino" and Astral projection's "Trust in Trance" or the "Astral Files", (productions that went out in approximately similar times) to notice the huge difference. Despite the cheap preset effects that A & N used in "el-nino", the powerfull epic lead-line of the current track is enough to evoke huge emotional responses.
Similarly, James Holden's track were produced in a share-ware program called Jeskola Buzz. The sound of the current program is considered to be cheap, and many describe it as having a terrible "wooden" and "raw" sound. Holden managed to produce some great melodies with it though, something that is evident in tracks like "horizons". IMO, not only had the unique (bad?) sounding qualities of buzz affected the last result, it probably had a positive effect. In an era where crystal-clear qualities was the rule, Buzz's raw sounding sounded more experimental, unique and hence helped holden to establish this new kind of proggy-sound (where Ozgur Can, Nathan Fake and Kosmas Epsilon have been part of it)with characteristics such as intense hoovery bass-lines, "wooden" drums and melodic bell-sequences (e.g. a break in the clouds).
Concluding, melody is powerfull and essential, production is not. melody/theme is the primary determinant but ofcourse, there must exist some basic degree of production (this would vary from individual to individual though...some high-tech freaks would just love to listen to well-engineered sounds). This is why, many people(including me) still love to listen to ancient electronic sounds of tangerine dream and kraftwerk,to non-remastered rock albums from the 60s and 70s, to 80s synth-pop albums etc. etc. In addition, considering System-J's analogies, this is why the first star-wars trilogy is million times better then the new ones and that alien-1, bladerunner and dune are timeless sci-fi movies in contrast to independence day (not that we don't get quality sci-fi in the recent years...Matrix and a few others were great..). the effects may have an effect, but is the overall theme, the plot and the acting that makes the difference. |
