Yep...I see exactly what you're saying. I just wasn't sure if I missed something completely from the other thread due to my skimming.
What you speak of is a fine line when it comes to morality and what is ethically right. We talked about it a lot in one of my philosophy class last semester. What we concluded? I couldn't even tell you...that's what philosophy is all about! Haha...being skeptical, there's never a right answer |

Oh ok..
Yes people were pretty disgusted with what happened in mexico, however to me it did not seem that anyone expressed as much emotion as they did in this thread.
This thread also just set me off. I see frequently on the news, people being glorified because they saved an animal from drowning or whatnot and they are talked about as if they saved a human. Don;t get me wrong I love animals but it just seems that sometimes there is no separation made.
I remember when they did a story on this guy that went to New Orleans to save animals and he spent so much money or whatever. Seriously who gives a about a cat when many HUMANS needed saving. I thought that was wasted effort.
So I guess what I am trying to say is that, I am just touchy when it gets to this subject.
So to answer your question finally Lisa, I didn't see anyone saying they wanted to kill or cut up any of the pepole that killed the guy in mexico. Not that they should, but thats what I mean about not showing as much emotion.
Did I make any sense? I hope so:D |
I have a very simple answer to this...
Humans have decision making mental capacity and animals do not (think of them as babies). Crimes against humans are usually blurred with anything that the victim may have done - you hear things (which DISGUST me) like, "She was raped because she dressed provocatively" etc. etc.
Now, the reason people become very angry about crimes against animals is the victim is completely innocent. That is the reason it evokes slightly different emotions. I don't think anyone in this thread thinks that animals are more important than humans (except perhaps me ;)), they just recognize that those people who prey on them do so without any conceivable provocation. |

very good point! ... my thought is that with i.e. crimes against humanity or gross human rights violations (i.e. rape/ torture), humans can also be innocent victims. the difference however is that human vicitms may/ can have a 'voice' (if not their own then through some NGO etc) and can have 'representation'. animals barely/ rarely do - ESPECIALLY when the perpetrator is human. |

do little girls abused by their fathers/step fathers for years and years have any representation? ever heard of cases when a girl decides to tell her mother what's going on and the mother blames the little girl herself?
what about little children who are abused by a pedophile and are threatened that he will kill them if they say anything?
what about human trafficking victims, when the women get stripped off their passports in a foreign country and cannot contact any authorities because they are in the country obviously illegally? bear in mind the happy stories of women being found/rescued shown by media is a tiny fraction of the actual amount of them
i really think this innocent/not innocent argument is irrelevant in the discussion of human vs. animal cruelty - sure the poor puppy could not do anything, but for god's sake, there were 2 witnesses who are enough to not come forward or at least yell at him to stop |

you've just given yourself the answer. that's exactly my point. ... b/c it's just an animal. who cares, right? |
