Finally back at home in San Diego...
This Weekend was just packed with music for me. Right when I got picked up from the Airport, John Beaver and I worked on the Coachella Discs for this year and really the only breaks we took were to sleep and to go play @1015 on Friday.
The party was cool.. no doubt 4 Strings rocked it extremely hard. Our set felt good ... though I guess I need to get used to playing triples. John Beaver and CyberJoe, you guys rock...
I got a chance to drop my new track and got a feel for it on a loud system and I was quite happy with it. It's called "Stalker" and can be heard on my myspace page.
Nice to finally meet Taj and DJ Blurr in person:
Blurr, I heard you're quite digital yourself...?! what do you like to use?
Rizen and Stephanie... good to see you two with your awesome photography skills.
I hope to make it back to the bay again soon.
peace

Hey Thomas, was nice meeting you also Friday.
For Djing:
Currently Im using an all Digital setup consisting of my laptop and Traktor 3.2. I also use a 24/96 soundcard that allows me to bring my latency way down. In the future, as I progress through sets and gigs at the club, ill be adding more to the setup. All MP3’s I have are ripped either completely at 320 or higher from promo CDs for club usage, or recorded straight from my vinyl collection at 320 or higher. Using my laptop also allows me to use other equipment at the club, IE, turntables and CDJ’s. I simplify things by using just my laptop though. I was endorsed by Native Instruments early on, things changed when they cleaned things up over there. I have been a working Dj, Digitally for about 6 years now. I started working with PCDJ to begin with, but made the jump early on to Traktor because my XONE92 Mixer works best with it. I have also used other programs and software like Torq, Visual Dj Studio Pro, and other apps. I find Traktor to be the most versatile though, giving me full capability on the flanger and Effects Thus I have stayed with Traktor ever since. I also use Final Scratch from time to time. Yes, I still am a big Vinyl Junkie too.
Im happy to also say that after research, Im possibly the only local DJ who has gone completely digital, and has brought the complete digital setup to the main room at 1015. Could be wrong, but after being at the club countless weekends, no one else but Blank & Jones has brought an all Digital setup.
Why Digital?
Portability. I don’t have to lug around a record case or worry that my CDs will ever be stolen. Setup is a breeze, and takes about 3 minutes for me to take down and setup at any club. Also, I have Trance dating back to 93, so I can take requests if anyone wants to hear a particular Track.
For Production and my own tracks:
I use Oxygen 61, Ozonic, (M-Audio), Abelton 6.1, Absynth 3 & 4. I still use Reason and Wavelab.
Mixers I use at Home|Studio:
Allen & Heath XONE 92, Stanton SMX-401, Stanton M.505 & 304 (both with SST/P&G cross faders built in), RANE TTM 57SL Mixer, RANE MP 2016a Rotary Mixer
RANE XP 2016a Expander
For Recording:
I use a program called Inport. USB recording to the outs on any mixer. Versatile and easy to use. All recordings done at 320 or higher.
:thepirate What do you use Thomas? |

Blurr,
Dude we use alot of the same things.
I also use Traktor 3.2 to DJ.
I have an M-Audio Quattro Soundcard. That gives me up to 4 channels out, really low latency ... yada yada yada, you know how all that works. I could hook up to a mixer into the seperate channels and control everything on my laptop from the mixer... BUT for club purposes and having to set up quickly and so on, I use the internal mixer that Traktor has.. HOTKEYS BABY!! I'm used to it. I've used Traktor since 2.0.
I came into the scene as a producer and i started DJing about 3-4 years ago. All digital. As much as i would have liked the vinyl experience I think i passed all that by while i was just producing back in the day, (which i started in 2000)
I've been using Reason since the 2.0 version. I also have cubase3 and ableton5.. cubase was mainly used to arrange. i produce and tweake everything in Reason and then bring the wav files over since i feel more comfortable editing and cutting and messing with a wav file more than a midi file from a VST... BUT again we all try to move on so i'm gonna switch to ableton i think, we'll see.. I like abletons layout.. it makes sense.
i also have the Oxygen 8 keyboard and the reason for that is that it's easier to get on an airplane with the small version.
I use Wavelab (4.0 i think) to rip vinyl (or internet radio..shh on the down low :tongue3)
I also use it to sample things like kicks and snares which i collect for further tweaking and compression.
I think that's it.. i'm lacking the amount of hardware that i would like to have but i've been on the move lately and i can't drag rack compressors and synthesizers and like that with me...
so once i settle down a bit i'll start collecting those.
so sounds rather similar doesn't it?
i might have forgotten some things but that's the main stuff

I know, I was there with you guys when you dropped your first track, filming you..
Ya, those quattro soundcards are great, does sound similar. I opted for the PCMCIA version though, due to the fact theres alot of activity behind the booth on some nights, and if someone snaps the USB from my lappy, there goes the sound.
Ive been told I'll have another spot coming up at 1015 shortly... I may bring my KAOSS pad for this one. :D Its good to see that some Djs share my interest in Digital as well. :D |

Think I am gonna try to get the sound guy at work to find a reason to order Traktor and let me use it lol. Though I'm pretty comfy with Ableton 6 (though I haven't done much with it in awhile).
Have the M-Audio Quattro, too...per Radman's advice. Got it stupid cheap ($20) off of ebay off a guy who took down his auction to sell it to me. He would have gotten so much more for it.
PS. G&D are all digital although Dresden will through an occasional CD in that has only vocals on it to through over the music. |

Yes, how could I forget about G&D :conf:
Anyone have a tracklisting for the night that (4Strings) Jan De Vos played? I have some tracks he played, but not all of them.. I got a picture of that Dance4LIFE Track he played that was HOTTT.

Im constantly tweaking and perfecting the productions I have done right now. I plan on releasing 1 each month I play, starting in April this year... They have already been completed, just I wont release them all at once. I recently got back into production last year, after taking too long of a break.
I have an unofficial remix of Andains - Beautiful Things I want to release in April. Needless to say, 1015's audience will be the first to hear it. Hope it does well, and that I get everyones approval. If it goes well that will be indication to me to send it over to them to proof.
With the amount of Music I listen to, its hard not to play them other choons the nights I play.
Currently Im working on finding a female vocalist for a couple tracks I already have completed, hopefully landing the sweet voice of Justine Suissa, or Karen Overton. We will see, once they are done I'll let you get a taste of em Thomas.
Sean Tyas is producing a track for me at the moment, so alot of the focus is going towards that. I really do need to get back in the studio to finish up what I have, and finalize so I can play them at 1015. Both Artimus and I have a label we want to establish, so hopefully I can start sending out promos of my own stuff real soon.
I also plan on working with Maor Levi, and Darren Tate for a few Tracks... we will see :happy2: |

Sounds like a tall order.... well knock 'em dead. Can't wait to hear your stuff. I'm all about producing in every aspect and i'm interested to see other peoples strategies.
the only people i ever had touch up sessions with was Deepsky and Shawn Parker (Desert Sol, ex- Deepsky)
I really value Beaver's feedback on the tracks as well since projects my work as if we were playing it for a crowd and than we go step by step. And sometimes i have to change wind ups here and there and sometimes it's fine where it's at.
well like i had mentioned in an earlier post my new track "stalker" is done.. and i'm gonna move on to some new material after our Coachella Project is done. |
