Not a thing. It has everything to do with intelligence.

dick cheney would beg to differ

There is a lot of anti-intellectualism in America, probably due mostly to our many strong religious traditions. And our public school system is utter , which probably makes the intelligence of the "average American" look really low to "outsiders."

But we also have some of the best universities and produce a large proportion of inventors and new technologies, so it's not really right to say that Americans are "thick as pig ."

On the other hand, it's a pretty popular belief in America that Europeans are arrogant and snooty. Is that true or just something that Americans incorrectly believe?

;)

As opposed to the widely secular rest of the world? Who are you kidding.

in proportion to what? Is this a per-capita statement? As opposed to other countries "inventors per capita"?

Great post, couldn't have said it better myself. It would seem that America contains more of the "extremes" on either side. It's not a constant "mostly fairly intelligent" populace as you would think of other countries being.

No, as opposed to the relative secularism of Europe. Most of the rest of the world is just as religious, although not all of their religious traditions are as strongly anti-intellectual as fundie Christianity.

"Average American" is in quotes because it's an abstraction. I don't really know why I put "outsiders" in quotes.

I don't have any statistics on this, but it's pretty impossible to deny that many recent (past one hundred years) world-changing inventions and scientists have either been American in origin or supported by American funds, government, or university system.

That depends on your population sample. Its a 300 million person country. To think of it as "unified" as opposed to "united" is a little much.

Look at the coasts, you have more education. Its standard distributions of coastal cities attracting trade and ideas and new people and cultures, and the agricultural heartlands remaining more static.

Look at breadbasket countries and youll find similarities to bread basket states.

We just have a higher standard of living.
