Since its still football season, i wanted to hear your opinions.
i say Walter Payton
imo the best all around back & player in NFL history. Awesome at not just rushing but recieving, BLOCKING & could even throw down field. Also who can forget his high step while trying to get by faster defenders. |

| hard to compare. Walter had the most class. but LT just looks stunning on the field. I say LT IF his knees don't give out. |

Walter Payton was the best "all around" football player ever because he could and did do just about everything an offensive player could do. He ran the ball, caught the ball, threw the ball and blocked extremely well.
Ditka ed up by not letting him score a touchdown in the Super Bowl. |

This is a very broad question, because there are many great running backs of the past, present, and future. In the past, such greats were Franco Harris and Tony Dorsett leading their respective teams to Super Bowls. There were guys like Billy Simms (Detroit), OJ Simpson (yes him .. until he screwed up), Gale Sayers, and Jim Brown who were great, but never got a chance to see the big stage.
But in my opinion, guys like Roger Craig, Eric Metcalf, Dave Meggett, and Marshall Faulk revolutionized the duties of the running back position by turning into wide receiver backs who can also run the ball. Although not the best of blockers i might say, but they would confuse defenses on the type of plays that were drawn out for them. These guys have set the tone to what type of running back many teams hope to have, such as Brian Westbrook, LT, Steven Jackson, and Reggie Bush.
Running backs that scared many defenses in the past were Jim Brown, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, and Bo Jackson. Brown, Smith, and Jackson punished defenses night in and out. Payton and Sanders just embarrased defenses, and broke ankles. |

people voting for Barry Sanders are most likely biased insofar that they didn't see any of the other greats who played before him. Most of us are in our 20s and such, you know.....
not that Mr. Sanders wasn't great mind you, but I'm ing bombed right now. |

| I dont know about you guys, but Reggie Bush will become a great R.B too. If we have this poll in 5 years, he's name will propobly be up there. |

| I never really got to see the earlier RBs as I'm only 22, but my favorites have been Emmitt and Barry, and I'm starting to really like LT. |
