Just got back from a fantastic night. First off, Big Mike, thank you so much for getting us up upstairs. It was fantastic hanging out with you. Jason -- it was AMAZING meeting you. Your set was beyond incredible. The last 1.5 hours in particular were unbelievable. EnigmaT -- great meeting you as well; see you next week at Sander. Eco -- fantastic to finally meet you in person.
Now, for my review of G&D. I have to say, they started out strong with Dangerous Power. But then they lost me, and they only got me back for bits and pieces here and there. I've seen them so many times now, but this set was probably my least favorite. I just wasn't feeling it. Molly and I got our coats around 5am but stayed for an encore of Dangerous Power (because we're pop whores). But once again they lost us right after that and we were on our way. I love 'em, but I did not have a connection with their set tonight.
Nonetheless, I had a great time. Special thanks to Tara at the bar on the main floor for the strong drinks all night long. |

| I got in around 11:30 and the first thing I said to my friend was, "I can guarantee you this guy (meaning Jason) will be better than the DJs that we're really paying for." Dude kept my word. Jason's set was beyond ridiculous. He really needs to headline a big club in NYC. |

My sentiments exactly.
Got in around the same time, and Jason was playing great stuff. Towards the end of his set he was absolutely killing it. He played the song that's in video # 2 from his Argentina thread, and it was bliss. I saw G&D setting up and was so sad knowing it was going to end.
Sorry, but G&D did NOT have me last night. Having the urge to talk rather than dance is never a good sign. Yeah, they did some of their anthems which is always silly fun, but really not much of interest. First time they've disappointed me.
I did have a ton of fun, thanks much to Big Mike. Great to see Eco, enigmaT, colibri, fotoaddict, and of course Jason. I think I saw phoenixbebe and langxazn in the crowd? Lost you after that.
Still not sure what to say about Pacha. I do like the different floors, and one of the bartenders was uber-nice, but it's a bit too claustrophobic for me. I know everyone else hates it, but I still prefer Crobar. Of course, for a big venue Roxy and Roseland are where I'd most want to be, but that's seeming impossible/unlikely these days. |

I've got to say, that is one of the worst sets I've heard Gabriel & Dresden play. I have heard dozens of their recorded sets and seen them live 5 times now and that had to be the worst. There was no flow, no progression, just chip-chop and opening-hours music from when they got on until I left at 3:45 (cos it sucked so bad). Their set reminded me exactly like KTU at midnight on Saturdays: TRYING to sound cool and innovative, but in the end, playing "commercial-ish" or "overplayed-ish" (like hearing "put your hands up for Detroit" on KTU; we'll be like "oh cool!" because KTU is so e-sounding but in reality, every DJ and his mother have played it for about a year). That is what their set reminded me of, they're TRYING to get into the whole tech and electro realm but can only get so far compared to every other DJ anyone on this board sees (who isn't trance) or likes, on a regular basis. A Gabriel & Dresden original track will ALWAYS get me dancing, but last night, it seemed like they just slopped everything on like a horribly-made hamburger, and I think anyone who gives them a good review is doing so cos they have them on a separate pedestal and standard than any other DJ. If it were any other DJ, especially a LOCAL, he'd get a horrible review and people would be saying "all he did was play filler music", but as with most people (not their fault, but it's really obvious, even my friends are kinda guilty of it), everyone gets startstruck that it's G&D (as with most of the other jocks) and really sees past the fact that it was really a lackluster, uninteresting, uncaptivating set, which was only made worse by the lack of any vibe that the layout of Pacha always contributes to (I just don't like that place and agree 100% with Zachias, it's just not the best EDM venue, minus the sound), I wish we had them at Crobar.
On another note, Jason Jollins wow'd me last night!!! I'm not usually a fan of his sets, but he really tore it up last night, I really really liked what he played as opening music, and Gabriel & Dresden should have took that feed a little better and banged it out proper, cos you really provided one of the best opening foundations for the headliner to build up on, that I've heard in months. Great job!
All I can say is I hope next week isn't the same. Markus & Sander have total potential to EITHER bang it out with some proper trance and tech, OR go the other way and think New York wants to hear more minimal tech and electro. I want Sander to close it up hard, dark and fast, none of this pseudo-electro-tech garbage, these former-trance producers/DJs just can't pull it off. This is a city where minimal tech and electro has really taken off and some of the DJs we get on a weekly basis at some of the smaller parties are really INNOVATORS in the genre, internationally, so when names like Gabriel & Dresden come and play what they, and everyone, thinks is "minimal tech", I just have to yawn (as opposed to their sets elsewhere in the US, where electro and minimal techish stuff is being brought BY THEM, and not previously by names like Sven Vath, Picotto, Tretemoller, or all the other minimal tech DJs we get so often, yet under the radar). I told my friend, "If I wanted to hear this stuff, I would go down to the basement and listen to the DJs there DO IT RIGHT", but I came for Gabriel & Dresden, and the amazing mixup of trance and tech that they've provided me in the past few times I've seen them. Is there not ONE DJ that is not playing that D-Ramirez and DJ Mason sound (or whatever millions of bite-offs of their sound are out) in their set, at some or another venue in Manhattan? I love that sound but to hear every DJ in the scene go the same exact route in every set every week breaks yarbels.
Let's cross our fingers for next week, I guess, and let me get ready for tonight cos D:Fuse and D-Formation are gunna kill it!!!!!!! Nice seeing everyone last night: Molly, kadomony, Big Mike, and the rest, I'm bad with names but nice meeting you too (takes me like 3 introductions to fully know a TA and their name and what they look like) haha. |

Saw them for like 30min at the beginning of G&D's set...nice seeing the TAs I know and of course meeting two others (gmoney & blake's roommate). Frank & Mike, I promise not to confuse your names ever again :D!!!
Jason was good as expected and did a great job of building up the energy for G&D. G&D were far from awful BUT didn't seem to do enough with what Jason left off for them. There were a ton of tracks I just loved hearing and dancing to but there were a number of times I was like "huh" and stopped moving completely. Pretty much all the G&D sets I've downloaded were better than last night. I won't knock them and say I wasn't entertained because overall I was...I do like that they made efforts to play requests (yankeeBaby we requested Mindcircus and by the time they played it you left :(). |

| Wow. I hate to pile on with everyone else, but I think Riddle and DJ Echo said it right about last night's set. I got there around 12:00 and really had a blast for Jason's set. G&D had me for Dangerous Powers and the next few tracks, but then their set just lost it's way. Too much electro twiddling from 2-3:30. I was shocked how unenthusiastic the crowd was, even around 3:30 when they dropped Tracking Treasure Down. Certainly not the best set I've seen from G&D. Overall, I had a fun night, but I think it could have been so much better. |

20. FAITHLESS - BOMBS (BENNY BENASSI REMIX)
HUGE TOON
i was really really happy to hear this track. i've been listening to it all week and its amazing.
i'm pretty sure they played it after Swing to Harmony.
JJ, I have to admit I was thoroughly impressed with your set. I was there early so I saw most of it. It was incredible. |

I think half of the people in that building knew what was going on last night, or knew the concept of THE superstar DJ... I saw so many birthday parties and stupid little kids, and in all honesty, an 18+ crowd at Pacha is ALWAYS worse than the 18+ crowds that went to Crobar. I really feel no vibe there anymore, and it's not the 18+ thing, like I said, I had all my best times at Crobar for Ferry parties and Armin events and what not, all 18+; the crowds at those just seemed to actually have some sort of clue what was going on, Pacha just has become THE spot to go indiscriminately after getting bombed in the pregame on the car-ride down from Westchester. It reminds me of Avalon's crowd toward its later months... but whatever gets them money, I'm sure they don't care. |
