| used to hate electronic music... this was only 2 years ago... "tylerM" and myself went to the same school, every time in the car he'd put it on i'd say shut it off... then me and him went on a little trip to detroit to see elevation open up for armin van buuren... since that night, i've been hooked... and because of it, i wouldn't be here posting this right now... thank you electronic music for being my savior! |

Wow....What got me interested in house music was going to the Limelight in 1993 to hear Keoki's Disco 2000 night. That lead to investing in mix CDs by guys like Carl Cox, Oakey, Danny Tenaglia and Sasha and Digweed. But I've mentioned this before: The mix CD that really changed my outlook on edm was Sasha and Digweed's original "Renaissance" compliation. After that, Sasha's Global Underground "San Francisco" totally blew my mind. It was so insipiring that I actually bought every single record on Sasha's SF and learned to mix it almost exactly as Sasha did! (I wonder if those records might be worth any $$$). And I hope there are others out there that heard these two compliations.....
But it takes more than a few clubbing experiences and mix compilations to really be immersed into edm. Electronica acts like The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Moby, The Prodigy, Kraftwerk, Daft Punk, EBTG and especially Underworld brought edm creativity to the forefront in my day. "To this day the synths in "Born Slippy" send shivers down my spine. Many of these artists were even featured on MTV!
I was lucky enough to land 2 college radio shows in 1995. One was dedicated to hip hop, the other house music. By my senior year of college, I was DJing all the local clubs in Boston like The Modern, Embassy, Venue, and Avalon and having the best time of my life. I would trade ANYTHING to go back to those wonderful days.
And like I mentioned before, my first "clubbing" experience was at the limelight in 1993 to hear Keoki. Ironically a decade later, it was me who graced those decks for a 3 year residency. Talk about coming around full circle! |
2 things...1. I remember when you opened for Mauro Picotto back in 2003 here and did a good job
2. I was just listening to global underground san fran before work today. I love that cd. It's definitely the best GU of all imo. I too have most of the tracks on vinyl. My favorite might be Travel - Bulgarian (Incisions Remix) |

Great thread. :D
My older brother was to blame for all of that...
...Depeche Mode... |
lol, same history here...
when i was still very young my brother came up with this new kind of pop and he had it on his speakers 12h/day driving my mum crazy but me nuts cauze i loved it the same way...
if u can imagine i bit, raised in eastern part of germany made it very hard and controversial to get such kind of music.
but thanks god after the the "german wall" fell only very few years after that all changed and got "revolutionized" about music, RMB, U96 and the very well know Thunderdome-dutch-hardcore compilation besides alot of other artists came up "shaping" us alot. however how kids are, they have different interests in this age and alot of other "things" came up that took my attention. since mp3 flooded the net more n more like 5-8 years later, i crossed the way of "tiesto - urban train" on some random dance compilation. a few days later i had every single Magik and ISOS disc and from that day on it raised "the fire" again lol. and this time without a doubt, constantly...
a bit more trance there a bit more electro here, this always changes a bit but the main topic keeps the same...
and thanks to a few more "recent" ;) friends who showed me about whats the essential of trackselection and programming and what the art of dj'ing/storytelling is all about...
i can (atleast as a poor laptop dj - i dont know how to beatmatch > pound my ass...:p) thanks god use it just as another form to express my thoughts...
VIVA LA MUSICA!!!!!

1st Coming: PVD at Roxy
2nd Coming: Fabric, London
But long before then my mom had me listening to all her dance music. She thinks its hilarious that she used to rollerskate/dance at Roxy. I try not to ask too many questions. |

There is an old bombshelter left over from Soviet times in St. Petersburg which is now a club called Tunnel...hanging out there in 2005 got me really back into EDM. |

| My mom always liked dance music but she loved the cheesiest stuff (like the stuff they play on KTU) and disco. First there was that Freestyle type of music back in the early 90's then Robert Miles - Children came out and we both took an interested to that style but at that time I was still listening to other genre's of music. It was Paul Oakenfolds set Live from Home @ Space in Ibiza 1999 that really converted me and then I pretty much stopped listening to all the other genre's and listened to trance pretty much 100% of the time. |

how cool is it that something that one person like yourself did has influenced so many people out there to broaden their horizons and become exposed to this thing called trance. every time i read one of your posts i think to myself that i am glad that you did.
when i have some time later on i'll add my story to this thread which will include the point when i stumbled onto this site 4 years ago or so... |

I used to... um... "party" a lot back in high school (93-97), and I would listen to WUNH (University of New Hampshire) "electronic lab" on saturday nights. B/c I "partied" too much, I ended up going to boarding school to improve my whatever. There, I met Chris Micali (aka Zephyr), and as they say, the rest is history.
The show that sealed the deal was PVD at Avalon (Boston, 1999) where I somehow walked into the VIP right behind the booth. I ended up watching him spin, basically just looking over his shoulder...and I could see the decks bouncing from thousands of people dancing to the same beat... an incredible night - the thought of which still gives me goosebumps. |

Wow... where to begin..
I always listened to just about all kinds of music (except for EDM) and even played drums in a few punk / rock bands... Over the course of one winter (prolly in 96) my good friend brought this tape in to my car. it was of a dj called X-Dream. i was a little hesitant because all EDM i heard before that was purely categorized as "techno" to me. I listened and it grew more on me. He would give me more tapes and I would just soak it up...the beats.. the rhythms...
shortly after i was invited to go to this "rave" thing going on at a place called big wheel in PA where i grew up. WOW... it was awesome... the bass... the dj's... the dancing... it was infectious.....I remember watching this dj TJR scratch and just tear it up.... i couldn't help but trying to move my body and trying to dance like the others but it felt so foreign.. (hahaha.. i know everyone has gone through that)....From that point on I couldn't get enough of EDM. I would make frequent trips around the east coast to go party's @ places like Space in philly among others... my earliest experiences were definitely in the rave scene......
Soon after a friend of mine got tables and we would throw little house party's when parents would leave for the weekend or night....... I was next introduced to this club called Twilo in New York. I didn't know what to expect but it was incredible.... I remember going there numerous more times.... I remember that feeling of being in the bubble lounge upstairs and occasionally hearing tracks which, once we heard them drop, someone would just grab my wrist and we'd run to the floor to find a spot to dance... awesome... I remember hearing tracks like Alive and Energy Flow and the place would practically explode.... .. I'd be walking out of the club @ 8am (after several encores) and we'd all be singing the same song trying to figure out the words so we could search for it....haha....
I may have spilled over beyond my initial EDM days, but those were still defining moments for me.....
Good thread. It's fun remembering these moments. I've had a smile the entire time I've been writing this. Haha!! =)
