Funny because Scientology take elements of science and apply it to Christian ethos. In asia it's called being Hindu.

The religious ones will win, whatever intellectual failings they might have against the other side can be overcome by violence and fanaticism.
Bit hard to argue when youre dead.

Not even violence and fanaticism can defeat the champion of science, MacGyver. Plus I can wield a nasty bunsen burner.

lol - the kind of phenomena that occurs when you combine science and religion isn't necessarily "Scientology" :p

In fact, a large number of prominent philosophers and scientists of faith are advocating a position of "Flexible Science/Religion," in which each side is forced to make rational concessions on what it is or is not authorized to make blanket/metaphysical statements about.

Yet just as credible as any other religion based on a book...

Among these advanced teachings, one episode revealed to those who reach OT level III has been much remarked upon: the story of Xenu and his Galactic Confederacy. Xenu (sometimes Xemu) is introduced as an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth in spacecraft resembling Douglas DC-8 airliners, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living. The alien souls continue to do this today, causing a variety of physical ill-effects in modern-day humans. Hubbard called these clustered spirits "Body Thetans," and the advanced levels place considerable emphasis on isolating them and neutralizing their ill effects

And the kinds of individuals who assume they're mutually exclusive are complete idiots (regardless of their credentials).

In the case of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, the only forms compatible with modern science are the watered-down varieties that deny much of what their religious predecessors believed for many centuries.

If you're discussing scriptural literalists, then yes, much of it would come into conflict, and I do think those people are (in general) idiots. I will say, however, you'd be hard pressed to find a majority of people in any of those religions (in a global sense) who are true literalists.

Even if it is subconciously, people (for the most part) have some understanding that religious ideals are about contexts - not scriptural literalism - and therefore adapt their faith for the context of the modern world.

Islam and Christianity have very strong scientific traditions - even going so far as to except modern evolutionary theories such as evolution (a doctrine accepted completely by the Catholic Church).

My only point in stating that those who feel faith and religion are mutually exclusive is that the kinds of people who make such claims are making bold face, metaphysical assumptions than can in no way shape or form be proven. This goes for both extremes (Science vs. Religion).

I hope that clarifies my position.

Yeah, you'd almost swear that Hubbard was taking the piss at the entire human convention of converting faith into a religious institution. If he didn't intend to, he certainly laughed about it all the way to the bank.

Makes you kind of wonder what other myths were created for purely political/propagandist reasons...

It was Peter, not Jesus, if I recall, who more or less started the Christian Church; quite some time after Jesus' death. And I am sure that Peter lived quite well after his myth mongering. So funny how some myths seem so much more believable than others - is this because of their credibility or is it more due to the fact that several thousands of years of indoctrination within human cultural development has established deeply-rooted archetypes of messianic behaviour?

well i don't think Peter was neccessarily taking a piss too. but you make a valid point. we see this today all the time a la Rev. Jesse Jackson and MLK Jr. For all we know Jesus could've hated Peter's guts but after his death Peter saw a financial/political opportunity and whored the out of it.

Science deals with empirical adequacy. When a scientist makes metaphysical statements, he is not doing science.

So I guess we agree?
