In my opinion, it's not reasonable for mothers and fathers to be treated equally solely based on the fact that women have children.

Treated equally in what sense?

Totally off-topic: Have you read any of Daniel Dennett's works? What did you think of them?

Man - Dennett sounds familiar, but I can't say I know anything off hand. Suggestions?

And I think if you want me to qualify what kind of equality I'm talking about, you kind of get my point already - total equality is retarded, and the areas of life where we DO feel people need to be treated equally need to be sorted out on a case by case basis. ;)

He works in philosophy of mind, philosophy of biology, and metaphysics.

His two most famous books are probably Consciousness Explained and Darwin's Dangerous Idea. His latest, Breaking the Spell, also got a lot of press, but it is his foray into the new "atheist crusade" of which he is the third prong (with Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins), a movement I am not too fond of since I think it will produce the exact opposite of the effect it intends.

I may start a thread on a very controversial topic related to this on which I am sure many people will have an opinion.

And no, it is not abortion. :p

I wish I went to school with more folks like you.

Couldn't agree with you more there.

i think men and women should embrace their differences. total equality among the sexes would be boring and it just doesn't make sense to me considering men and women ARE different. i mean it's logical to treat all people fairly, and i think that's what a lot of feminists have fought for (right to vote, equal opportunity in careers, etc)... but total equality just sounds like a bad idea to me.

as a woman, i've definitely been in situations where the outcome was affected either positively OR negatively based on the fact that i have boobs and a vagina, but i didn't freak out about it. if anything, i'd say that women have it easier.

then again, i've never been faced with extreme circumstances that made me think or believe otherwise.
