| quote: | KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian state plans to recruit "spies" from the public to snoop on unmarried lovers and report them to Islamic religious authorities, a newspaper said on Tuesday.
The Terengganu state government plans to enlist the part-time spies to look out for un-Islamic behaviour, such as unmarried couples kissing or holding hands, the Star daily said.
"Some of these 'spies' could be waitresses or even janitors at hotels acting as auxiliary undercover agents for our religious department," the head of the state government's Islamic and welfare committee, Rosol Wahid, was quoted as saying.
"Accurate details are required for the enforcement officers to act, otherwise they could be pouncing on married couples."
Last October, religious police in another part of this mainly Muslim country caused an outcry when they mistakenly raided the rented holiday apartment of a Christian American couple on suspicion that they were unmarried Muslims in "close proximity".

Malaysia is an 'odd' place sometimes, they're fairly tolerant and moderate for the most part about everyone and quite understanding with overseas knuckle heads stumbling through there. They've had these kinds of laws in the past which tend to get yanked as quickly as they pop up, they're particularly fussy about their work visa's I know that much, sort of a love-hate relationship with people working in the country. They need them, but they don't like them.
The legal system over there is a nightmare, it's divided into two separate courts, the Shari and the Secular courts and the depending on your personal religion and it can get fairly muddy as to what applies to whom, it went over my head. |

I don't know man, sometimes it looks more like a difference of degree, rather than kind.
In some Southern states in the US a man and a woman cannot check into a hotel room unless they show proof that they're married. Or, there's a law that a mailman cannot deliver mail if he sees two male names written on the box. These laws do get enforced from time to time, you'd be surprised.
Remember also that as recently as in 2003 two men were arrested in Texas in their home for having gay sex. This itself was a crime only 4 years ago and they enforced it. |

I'm not gonna even mention how many (yes, many) American doctors purposely withhold information from their patients if it doesn't agree with their moral views. |
Yeah I hear you on that, but to compare some Dr or Pharmacist that is withholding information or prescriptions due to their belief to this type of Mid Evil thinking is not even on the same playing field. Plus, if a Dr is found out that he or she is doing that, they shuld have thier license taken away.
At least you will not get thrown in prison if you are holding hands/ snugeling or getting a good bye chicken peck from your fav girl or boy.
Also I would like to know what state in the south that law is in, cause I have stopped in all of them at one time or another and checked in with my girlfriends in the same room in about every state except for Cali, Ill, Ohio, Montana, Wash. Org.... actually, I think I have in every Southern State. I know, I am a hoe ;)
actually I do remember a time I stopped over in Alabama and they called the good ol boy network due to the girl I was with was blond hair and blue eyes, till they heard her speaking spainish to one of the bar backs in the bar. There was one hell of a confused redneck. ha ha "Hey Ma, that there woman der is speaking some crazy pig latin!!" lol |

Sorry, The good ol Boy Network is what we south born and raised call RedNecks that know each other from way back, like during the civil war type days. The Good Ol Boy Network is mainly coined to a bunch of people that basically are the Police, Sheriff, Judge and Jailors with a few of thier Cousins thrown in for support. The mainly are related somehow in some form or fashion. Mostly, if not all anglos,
From Wiki | quote: | The good ol' boy network describes a system of social networking and perceptions alleged to exist prevalently among certain communities and social strata in the United States. Although the term originated in the South, these networks can be found throughout the U.S. and the rest of the Western world. It is typically taken to refer to informal social, religious, business, and political associations among white males ("good ol' boys"); however, in modern times can be composed of either or both sexes. In some areas, the good ol' boy network is said to still exert considerable influence over many aspects of local government, business, and law enforcement. Usage of the term can often imply a wrongful exclusion of others from the network; however, often the emphasis is on inclusion of a member, as in, "doing a good ol' boy a favor".
The term refers broadly to a highly decentralized social phenomenon rather than to any organized group or groups; there is no central structure or organization. The good ol' boy network is said to manifest in institutions such as religious or fraternal organizations as well as the local bar.
Some negative effects of the good ol' boy network are its exclusion of others, leading to leaders of a community possibly limiting business transactions to other elites, or to friends or acquaintances from within the network, to give friends better deals, and generally to reinforce traditional power structures over any other elements in the society.
Perceptions of religious and racial prejudice also endure, and the good ol' boy network is sometimes seen as unique to WASPs (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants), with Catholics, Jews, and minority groups excluded. The network also functions like any other social network inasmuch as governmental, business, and professional connections and concessions often develop via mutual friendships and introductions established through the network. |

the difference being that a) youre talking about one particular state law as opposed to a whole country. b) none of these laws were enacted in recent years. c) there arent dedicated taskforces to enforce such antiquated laws. |

Well the State of Texas had its Sodomy Law struck down by the Supreme court. Just look up Lawrence v. Texas , and in the case of the Moral Police that seems to be in every Muslim country, there is not a Supreme Court to save you. And again, getting in trouble for holding hands or touching is in no way even close to what the US's own back ward states have on its books.
And I would still like to know what states in the South have laws that prohibit an unmarried couple from checking into a hotel..... |
