| Neat idea, DJing during lunch. I just went to the library mostly during high school. Worked on homework, talked with some people who were there..studied, wrote, surfed the web..yeah. I saved my lunch money for CDs (mostly trance and progressive, and some other forms of EDM). Put some remixes of pop tracks. Although that might not be the "cool" thing to do on here, it would definitely work for high school kids. |

what school do you go to? the way you describe your HS sounds a lot like my old high school.
Definetly throw in a couple remixes, I would stick one early in your set to grab your audience's attention. High school kids are so impatient, they will write you off in a second if you dont play something that interests them. Prpoer education is definetly a great choice for that. |

I go to foothill HS.
I'm trying to find some good remixes. I would probably have an easier time if my HD wouldn't of crashed 2 weeks ago:(
Anybody have the names of some current popular remixes?
I checked radio 1's Pete Tong weekend jumpstart but nothing caught my eye.
I was thinking of putting in "Freemasons Love On My Mind (Back To Philly Mix)" I would probably remove
Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso - 82-83
It's a little bit long and repetitive. |

| After playing all these pop remixes, you should finish your set with Aphex Twin - Come To Daddy :p |

ahaha... that would rule
About a month ago I threw a party that was supposed to be a "rave," however... that would probably never happen here in Columbia, SC. I decided to play house music the whole night, but had to throw in stuff that people would know, or would sound like something that that they should know. I still received requests for rap, hip hop, and country (wtf?) music. All you have to do is one of three things: 1) say "I'll play it," and never play it 2) say "I don't mix like that" / "I don't have any of that" or 3) (which worked for me) "you came to a 'rave,' what the hell were you expecting?"
Luckily, we had about the same (if not more) amount of people that would have bitched about rap/hip hop than the ones that were bitching about house music. You just have to deal with people.
Better yet, just bring turntables... then you can really say "can't play it." |

WTF kind of cool-ass school do you go to? I would've never had an opportunity like this in my school, lol.
Pretty cool opportunity. :) |

people here are really annoying...
I'm sorry, but every club or bar (besides a gay bar) here in town that I've ever been to plays music that I hate, if I'm throwing a party, it's going to be my type of music being played. |

AMEN!
That's pretty cool that you've gotten a gig playing at your school during school hours (normally its Prom-only).
Although I haven't been in this specific situation, I have played at a prom for the local High School. During the night we got a lot of requests, ranging from new Top-40 tracks to slow-dance tracks (ballads). Be prepared to take requests (bring a note pad to keep track of em), and be respectful when telling them 'no'. Bring your Promo-Only and Now CDs, since no matter how hard you try to get your crowd to like the EDM tunes, you may be forced (by the principal or other higher-up) to play their music.
A tune that worked at the prom was Shapeshifters' "Lola's Theme". That track went off like a bomb. Out of the 400+ people on the dance floor, I'd say about 380 of them were jumping! I didn't have much time to try other tracks, but Daft Punk's "One More Time", Madonna's new tracks, or the new remix of Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust" might work really well.
Otherwise, don't fret too much about your mixing, since most of the audience will care more about what tunes you are playing. If a mix goes bad don't freak out, but do a simple fade-in, fade-out and move on. You're probably using a ty PA that the school is lending to you. If that's the case, then keep a ear out for your sound levels, as it could be really easy to distort your bass, etc.
Other tracks to try (off the top of my head):
cat Dolls: Don't Cha (Kaskade Club Mix)
Mary J Blige: Be Without You (Remix)
Benny Benassi - Satisfaction (it mey get requested as "that Wendy's commercial song")
and if you get hounded for Hip-Hop, drop this as a nice way to say "f*** you":
Aphex Twin - Windowlicker:D |
