Whatever, Bas! Stalker! I'm telling Bunny!

Are you sure about this?

Nowadays, there are so many DJs (and so many damn good ones) that it's also marketing.
Sure, you have to be a good DJ (actually, nowadays good producer) to get recognition, but if you don't get PR or do some sort of marketing, you don't get gigs and if you don't get gigs... well, no matter how good you are, if no one recognizes your goodness then it's all futile. (Not that anything I've said is anything original and said many times by others)

Marketing is a huge part of it, but it generally doesn't work very well when it comes off as desperate.

Hometown DJs sinking countless hours and dollars into a DVD = pointless

DJs like Jeff Mills doing a professional DVD because they are, well, professional = pretty cool

Personally I don't think DJ dvds are warranted or well received until you get to a Jeff Mills level. Jeff Milligan could pull it off I guess, DMC champs could do it (but that's a whole other ballgame) but I'm not seeing the appeal here, particularly when Addy throws a mike in his friend's face and asks for some endorsement (and then the guy freezes before he can think of something to say!) The interview portion of the DVD really puzzles me.

I'm glad you mentioned those guys, because I thought it was particularly hilarious when Raquel said, "NOBODY DJs on three decks!" LOL, come the on!! She should know better, especially since she recently posted a review about the temper tantrum Milligan pulled a month or two ago...and he uses FOUR decks! Tsk tsk, Raquel!

The actual cueing of three records simultaneously is not that difficult. Having a third deck is useful to DJs like myself who primarily play on two because you can cue up the next track before you take the previous one off. For techno DJs this can be pretty important because techno is more conducive to layering than, say, house music is where it's more about track selection than track layering and manipulation. Techno DJs want to keep a mix going as long as possible - not as important for most house DJs.

A lot of house DJs KNOW how to play on 3 decks but they just don't need to - 3 deck DJing really lend itself to the way house tracks are structured.

Ambient chilled house FTW! :p

I do agreed on what you've said though.

I'm not allowed to talk about a subject on a public forum? Why's that again? Bad for PR or what?

I'm continually amazed at the lack of constructive criticism and honest appreciation that i find here on trance addict. Only a few of the posts in this thread were actually contributing to the discussion instead of flaming or in themselves being pretentious. It's too bad.

I'm a fan of the style of music Addy spins; i really don't know much about him personally, but ever since Guv 10, I've been loving how he layers tracks over each other, and it has a certain style that you either seem to love....or as demonstrated here, hate.

As far as this DVD goes, here's my feedback.

Having the set recorded, showing how he mixes is a very cool idea. Is it an original one? Doubtful. Is he the best DJ on earth in his mixing skills? i don't have the qualifications to make that call. However, he has put his time, energy and money to produce a DVD that demonstrates him spinning a set. I have given a copy of this DVD to family and friends who are not in the scene who were AMAZED at what the DJs do with mixer boards, records and CDs to create a set... their perception of DJs has changed based on this. The DVD is very portable and generates hype--which I think was the whole purpose. I highly doubt he was creating it as an instructional video for the bedroom or residency DJs frequenting this forum. Think of the purpose of the DVD before ripping it apart--did it meet the purpose? In my mind, the mixing portion of the DVD certainly did. Several of my friends who are not into the scene, are now curious about seeing this sort of thing done live. It also gets EDM lovers pumped to hear this guy spin, because you see how much he loves it while he's on the decks.

Things I think he could have improved on, knowing the purpose of the dvd:

1. have multiple angles (24 style) to show the crowd dancing, while he mixes... i think there's TOO much time watching him turn nobs, when cutting to the crowd dancing would be a welcome relief for a little bit.

2. The interviews can't be taken seriously because they are too scripted. They would ahve been better to have a third party interview people and construct a balanced review of Addy, from the partier, to the managers, to friends. It could have been done much better, and I do feel that they take away from the credibility of the DVD because of how hokey they come across--that's unfortunate.

3. faster production time; the tracks are just old enough to be 'yesterday's news'... taking the production time up to a few months instead of a year (nov 05 to nov 06) would have made the tracks fresher for me.

Over all though, I can see the work that went into this and really appreciate it. It's meant for promotion, and I believe it hits that mark (interviews aside). It was a lot of fun to watch, learn and share with friends and colleagues.

My two cents.
