"Anonymous Club Nights" the latest clubbing trend? (pg. 3)

nice idea and it worked---20 years ago
This is like trying to stuff the monkey back in the box

Before big name dj's , people went to a club because they liked the club and if they were fortunate they liked the dj , but most dj's were playing pretty much the same stuff.

fast forward to today , with so many dance music genres, dj'ing styles, international dj's ,a much more aware audience , more polarised tastes and the idea becomes impractical.

I wish them luck , but it will never happen in T.O

it would never work in toronto. it has nothing to do with people being close minded. it has to do with the competition. imagine a club has a mystery dj playing and cover is $20 while another club has steve lawler or some other big name dj (advertised) for the same price on the same night. people would show up for the known dj.

Like Communism, it's a good idea in theory, but will never work in practice.

Also like communism it would work just fine were it not for a few corrupt people on top.

I really want to see how you've worked corruption into this.

I think the alure is much more then just the business model or the DJs.
It seems as if they are trying to build culture, which I can respect.

IMO if they kept the prices low enough, people would definitely show up. Its hard to pay for something, when you don't know if you are getting value for your money. As soon as they developed a strong following, and people realised that you get consistently good talent for the money you spent, it would catch on.

Neat idea though.

i agree.. but doing club hosting and promoting myself, if this concept was to work, at first you'd want to protect yourself untill you built up a large enough following. you'd have to change the DJs fee from a set pre-determined price, to a percentage of the promoters/clubs door/ticket sales. to be honest, i don't think any agent or DJ would like that idea whatsoever. i'd love for this idea to work.. but again agreeing with all of you, it would never work in the GTA.

Here I go again with another 'Back in my day' post....

Back in my day, the nights at the Void, Glass St, Hanley were rotated every 4 weeks -

Golden
Miss Moneypennys
Zero G
Gatecrasher

Because it was still very underground and not mainstream (the essential mix was played on Radio 1 at 4am on a Sat morning) the hype for certain djs wasn't really there. Sasha, Digweed, Allister Whitehead, Cox, Pete Bromley, Tom Wainwright, Lisa Lashes and so many more played in that place but in 1996, it really was more about the night and the club and the people... The djs had to fit around us rather than vice versa.

Those were the days that they played requests (and welcomed them).

i think it 's a great idea to making the scene what it use to be about the party not the dj

I like the idea.

It sounds like the club doesn't have a hard time filling itself anyways, and with regards to competition within Frakfurt, Cocoon is a fair heavyweight.

I think so long as the club consistently books solid surprise DJ's, the people will continue to go not based on who IS playing that night, but who PLAYED last weekend and they don't want to miss who it might be this weekend.

I'll make a point of going sometime this summer just to see how it all works out.

You never know, it could end up being one of your top parties ever.

What the article didn't mention was how much they charge at the door.

That is exactly what we used to be like, no sets to download, most of the time we wouldn't even know about them - 1 essential mix per week didn't showcase much talent!

BUT, the fear of missing one of those magical nights kept people coming for more - and we were never disappointed!

Exactly! And even with some sets being recorded and downloaded, it still doesn't affect what any given DJ *might* play that night. Then it's up to the DJ to make sure they're playing something other than "their usual set".

Would the DJ actually be "present" in some way or another? Or would it just be a canned set? I've always admired and appreciated a DJ who's in touch with the crowd's energy, who can adjust style, tempo etc. based on reading the crowd. If it's just a long online stream with no realtime connection to the club, you lose that entirely. Plus, would nightclubs honestly pay a booking fee for a streamed set? I don't know too many people willing to shell out $15k for a fresh mixtape :P And what about honesty? Why not just go online, download a bunch of demos and pre-recorded sets, get some hack to mix them together into a single set and play that? Or hype people on the concept of big DJs playing anonymously, then hire a local who will do a good job for a fraction of the cost?

I think this would work if they promoted an "anonymous set" night, built a DJ booth surrounded by 2-way mirrors, find a way to secretly smuggle him/her in, have the set and the night and everything, and then have the DJs step out and reveal themselves at the end.
