Anonymous club nights: a new trend?

Offenbach club Robert Johnson fights against DJ hype by refusing to publish lineups. “The club and its guests are the stars,” says their website.

“There were times when people simply went to clubs. For the music, the atmosphere and beautiful people you could meet there. That was in about 1927,” the club explains. “These days with everything available at the press of a button, the hype is killing name DJ nights, putting all kinds of expectations and dogmas on the essence of a good club night: dancing and intimacy.”

Instead of publishing lineups, to give punters a taste of what to music to expect each evening, the club has decided to now just stream anonymous sets from their website. Big DJs such as Villalobos, Richie Hawtin and Tiefschwarz regularly spin at the venue.

But the club has another reason for the decision: space. “In 2006, the Robert Johnson was overwhelmed with visitors on certain nights,” the venue explains. “It was tough dealing with the disappointed faces of those who were refused entry due to lack of space.”

If you’re thinking of paying them a visit, RA has browsed through the player and can confirm that someone will be spinning some, er, Villalobo-esque minimal tech-house on March 10th. Though maybe not Villalobos. If you’re after more Smagghe-like dark electro pop, best to go on March 16th. Smagghe might even be there. Has a new trend in clubbing been born?

Robert Johnson, run by DJ Ata from the Playhouse stable, is located just outside of Frankfurt.

I wonder how this would do in Toronto, seeing as this city is very big on the big DJ names. Personaly, I'd definitely be down for something like this. I always loved the "mystique" behind [house] music, especially when I didn't know anything about it.

that would be awesome, but the thing is, in this time and age, people would know really fast if someone "big" is spinning at the club or not, sms and phone calls will defeat this.

With every DJ having websites now....its eventually going to be put on their site.

I like the concept because 9 times out of 10 I don't really care who the DJ is......it won't work in Toronto simply because there are too many DJ whores in this town.

not posting line-ups? what the hell, i wanna know what kind of music is gonna be playing when i go to the club and i fi get there and it just so happens that they are playing something i dont like then im screwed with the entry fee, besides, what the hell kind of business is this, a businesses objective is to make money and if you wanna be efficient at it you gotta let the people know whats going on, this is business there is room for ideals but this is just ridiculous

Did u bother reading the article? Sounds like most of it went over your head.

Plus, I wouldn't put it past the clubbers of Toronto to not like this. Most people in this city are too close-minded for a concept such as this one.

I like this idea but yeah it would never work in a city like toronto like you guys said

the main reason that clubs bring in these big name DJs is to attract a larger crowd and charge a higher price, so it only makes sense to advertise that they are bringing in someone big, otherwise club owners would just be walking away from money.... which makes no sense
Big Boss
This would never work in Toronto. Promoters and club owners would be too scared to bring a $10,000 dollar DJ to their club and risk it being slow because they wanted to keep it a secret.

Hell, Benson and Hedges sorta tried this with the big DJ small club, but the bookers told their friends and everyone knew who was playing at the club even though it was supposed to be a secret.
Cosmic Fur
Like Communism, it's a good idea in theory, but will never work in practice.

Misanthrope
I've attended a night like that. I went to my first goodfellaz party with no expectations like that and had a ing awesome time. No line up was posted at all. However, goodfellaz are known to be a hardcore company.

This kind of a night would have worked really well at systemsoundbar.

/sigh
rulzz
i would totally go to a party like that doesn't even have to be big name dj as long as i know what kind of music is gonna be played
