They just don't make movies like "The Shining" or "Poltergiest" anymore. Those were scary, and they had their blood and gore scenes. But they weren't scary because of them. They were scary because they left the horror to your own imagination, something today's directors can't seem to figure out (not just horror directors, various others).

It isn't that those type movies aren't getting made, its just there was a lot of ground being broken with amazing frequency in that era (late 70's- early 80's). Today, movies like those come out, I feel like, once every couple of years. And yes, I agree with your statement that a lot of directors feel the need to bash the audience over the head with their points, but the greats of today, just as with any time, don't do that. Frankly, I thought The Shining was fairly boring, as I find most movies pre-1990, although I do completely understand the devoted following and critical acclaim it has received.

I think after the 1990's the entertainment industry has fallen into a deep ditch. Only thing we should have been of afraid of during the transition from 99-00 shouldn't of been Y2K but very very bad entertainment. This goes for all subject; music, movies and video games. :p

Yeah, well that's just like your opinion... man.
Seriously though, television entertainment (mainly HBO) is molding into something truly beautiful at this point. So I give your ditch theory about a half-second worth of thought.
Just look at this list...
Six Feet Under
Sopranos (redifined the mafia genre)
Deadwood (arguably best western period)
CSI (seemingly basic show, but the mood and subtle exisential undertones make it more complex than most think)
Nip/Tuck (Season 1&2 where both entertaining and intellectually compelling)
Band of Brothers
Rome

i thought the first was "below ok." wasn't horrible. The whole allusion to America foreign policy SO tacked on it was more offensive than having the gun to the babies head. It was like the script read:
[page 65]
He enters the room and wheelchair freak talks about nuclear testing.......................
AND THEN HE STICKS THE AMERICAN FLAG IN TO HIS BRAIN!!! YEAHHHHHH
AND THEN HE SWIRLS IN AROUND WITH ALL THE NOISE /SQUISH SQUISH/ YEAH!!!!
[turn page]
seriously, when Hills Have Eyes 2 trailer said "some critics say the 2006 Hills Have Eyes was TOO intense, too shocking, too disgusting!"
i thought the teaser trailer was ing awesome though!
Saw 3 had a press release the day after opening night saying a woman had fainted during the show. gay.
Hostel had a constant campaign of "there have been reports of paramedics being rushed to shows of Hostel. Do not watch this movie if you have a weak stomach! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!....which is pretty gay because the old man had fainted outside the theater walking up a flight of stairs.
And then when the DVD for Hostel was released, the commercial had epic classical music like it was one of the greatest films ever made. eli roth, ing fag
my story of organized murder back in english class in high school was sooo much better
but Hostel had a cool trailer too!
the rumor went that saying "hostel" landed the guy $25k, which has been loosely confirmed in interviews, although i don't know if its just an organized joke.
and hostel 2 teaser:
it just screams: "WE KILL PEOPLE IN THIS MOVIE! PLZ WATCH! KTHX!"
and now:
banned trailer for Exorcist(twas on the 25th anniversary dvd):
This is pretty intense. so plz don't watch it if you get ed up easily http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ru9fX9wvE6k
and glory to my fav

Well ya ofcourse it's my opinion, never said I was forcing you to believe the same thing.
And I have always adored HBO, sadly I don't have it.
Movies on the other hand havent been that great since 00 in my opinion, same thing with games.
