There is this scale IM seems to use a lot...
These tracks use it:
Acid Killer
Where is S
Over Mode
Blue Muppets
Psycho

I think I was able to map it to C

C D Eb F# G Ab Bb C

Is this the blues scale? I'm not sure what scale it is...or if I even got it right...someboyd that knows IM's music well help me out.

There might be a clue in here:

It's pretty cool artical...but it doesn't help at all.
RichieV
it is a natural minor scale with a raise 4rth. Might have some fancy name because there are literally hundreds of names for every permutation but that is essentially what it is.
Frost-RAVEN
hmm...IM seems to like using this scale quite a bit...I'll play around with that and see if I can get a similar sound.

natrual minor plus raise 4th

I couldn't find a scale that only had a raised fourth. The only scale that was close to that was a Hungarian Gypsy (or Hungarian Minor; or Mela Simhendramadhyama), but that one also has a raised seventh:

A,B,C,D#,E,F,G#

I always thought most psy-trance songs used a harmonic minor scale, since it's the one that sounds more "eastern" to my ears. Try it:

A,B,C,D,E,F,G#

Here's another one to try:

Mela Nitimati

A,B,C,D#,E,F##(or G),G#

Oh wait, I think I found the one Rich was talking about, Natural Minor with a raised 4th:

Mela Sanmukhapriya

A,B,C,D#,E,F,G

Although, to me, Harmonic Minor sounds like it would fit psy-trance better.
Frost-RAVEN
I think I figured it out...the scale that IM uses a bunch is a natural minor witha raise 4th and 6th...BUT there is not seventh...it's a hextnonic scale, so:

in A

A - B - C - D# - E - F# - A

That's it...

Good exmaple in the track Mush Mushi (which happens to be in A) at 5:24...listen to that melody, it's in this scale. I really think IM just made up their own scale.

i bet you a million thousand dollars they would have no idea what scale it is, and found it themselves, with their ears. u should try it. guarantee you'll do better than you will looking up scales forever in search of the magic scale that rox ur sox.

imo ppl who play in scales and have certain chord progessions engrained into their mind are bad piano players for the studio, they should stick to playing live, concerts and such.. maybe playing in a cover band, cause thats what they do best, play other ppls music n ideas.

gr8ape
They probably have a general idea of the scale when they start a melody, but i dont think they would keep track of all the changes and arpeggios: which means, just do what sounds right

not sure what you are getting at. YOu claimed that IM made up a new scale , i'm telling you they didn't . What ever scale they might of stumbled upon , someone has done it before. I'm not trying to steal IM's thunder but i think it is a little silly to give them that sort of credit.

And you , a trance producer , should be the last person to critize someone for re - using progressions. Everything you have done , and will do in this genre , harmony wise was done about 300 years ago. The only difference between you and someone that knows the progressions is that it will just take you a little longer to come up with something that has already been done. I guess i'm just politely asking you to get off your high horse ?
