Glowsticks are normally made of hydrogen peroxide that is kept separate from a solution of a phenyl oxalate ester, until you crack the stick and allow them to mix together. I wouldn't want to consume either of these. While putting them on your face is one thing, digesting them is another completely.
While there are a few different ways of making a glowstick all of them involve at least 2 chemical compounds interacting with one another and then bonding to a colored dye. I'd say well over 95% of them are made with Hydrogen Peroxide and Phenyl Oxalate Ester... not a recipe for health. |
Phenyl oxalate ester is nontoxic and the hydrogen peroxide is at a concetration lower than 35% which makes it also nontoxic. For hydrogen peroxide to be dangerous it has to be greater than 50% and you would have to be drinking it like water. Big words aren't always dangerous. |

i never said it would kill you, I just said it wasn't a recipe for health to have this stuff mixed with your drinking water. I think most would agree. btw: this came up because someone mentioned glowsticks in peoples water, so in fact what I was referring to was the purposed safety of just that; drinking it like water.
I also realize that Phenyl oxalate ester is only used in very very small concentrations so I was not terribly worried about it anyway, but I still wouldn't drink a glow stick, common sense should prevail here.
You may not die from something labeled as 'non-toxic' but that doesn't mean it's going to make you feel good by any means. In general its a bad idea to have them in your water bottles if for nothing more than the crap that ends up on them from your hands, floor etc....
Kids: Don't eat/drink glowsticks.
edit: some glow sticks also contain Rhodamine B which is toxic so unless you know which type you have.... |

| no of course not, but consuming it dosent mean a trip to poison control either. common sense should prevail here but if by some chance you get some on your hands or mouth you shouldnt panic. thats all im trying to get across, that the contents arent EXTREMELY POISONESS AND MEAN DEATH. |

| I didnt trip her out with any lightshows, cause this was at almost 7 am, so the night was coming to an end. I guess i should have thrown something at her, but other than the fact that i was in a happy mood, im not a hostile person, and if she's messed up then thats her problem. Also, i was so shocked by this act that i just stood there for a minute and tried to understand what just happened, then i went to Josh and told him what just happened. Its just mind boggeling to me, why the hell would you do that. I mean this chick was looking pretty messed up, all sweaty and grabbing her face, so i offered her some water, is that so wrong? I just dont get some people... |
