DJ Dan and the DJ mag top 100

DJ Dan's ranked #5 in the world. Top house DJ in the list... and he's come out of nowhere. So when I heard he was playing at a club in Shanghai, I just HAD to go hear him play.

So I went. Super super club called G Plus... piss perfect soundsystem and acoustics (despite being covered in mirrors); but 75% of the dance floor was occupied by high tables and bar stools.

Strange. Especially since most tables were unoccupied. Maybe it's a Shanghai cultural thing

Dan was already playing when I walked in, and I heard his set for an hour and a half. It was the most purile crap I've ever heard from an globally renowned DJ. Wearing a hat, not looking up, not smiling.. and playing funky house. He then moved to electro; his transitions were awful for a dj his "calibre".

Really makes me wonder about is ranking and how the fcuk that DJ Mag system works. By the time he finished his set, he'd lost about 40% of the crowd from the floor and the club. His last 30 minutes were particularly bad. Nobody noticed him leave, nor did they give a damn. Either the Chinese didn't dig him, or they just generally don't get it... EDM, that is. Hip hop is H U G E L Y popular there.

What a waste of a great club and time.:sadgreen:

Your first mistake was putting any stock in the DJ mag poll at all.

Your second mistake was going into a night being not at all familiar with the music you were about to hear - it's hardly DJ Dan's fault that you don't like funky house and electro.

Oh well.

just dont worry about it, your argument is kind of pointless. we all know that the dj mag poll is just a popularity contest, anyway. beign ranked higher or lower doesnt make you a worse or better dj at all.

I don't have faith in the poll... but I did want to go hear how an unknown DJ made it to #5. My money is he got a techie to write him clever program that multiple-voted.

Your mistake is to assume I don't like funky and electro. The fact is I do, and that's what I play as well. It's Dan's fault for playing a set loaded with crappy cheese, for poor track selection and transitions, and for having the personality of a piece of cabbage left out in the sun.

Calling DJ Dan an "unknown" is worth a laugh or two itself. :stongue:

Sorry you had such a time.

I'd be ok if it was a popularity contest. But Dan doesn't even have a great set of . It's ridiculous to even consider he'll be popular for his music, coz he was halfway to nowhere.
He hung around a space that was neither entirely cheesy, nor intelligent, nor entertaining. "Randon" is how I can best describe his set. He wouldn't have entertained ANY demographic that enjoyed any genre / style of house.

Yes, because we certainly all know that nikhil chinapa is the voice of the people!
