I just threw Eminem out as an example of a white rapper who has perhaps crossed the great chasm of racial sterotyping?

i used to listen to nothing but hip hop back in high school. i guess i just got tired of it or something about the time i graduated and started listening to punk and radio rock' n roll like system of a down and what not. i listen to that genre for about a year and then i moved to new york where i discovered techno for the first time on napster. ever since then thats the only thing i listen to. ive been listening to it for about a year and a half.
i say that nobody should talk about somebody elses type of music since its better to have an open mind about things, especially music. i also say that everyone is a hypocrite so it doesnt really matter to me i just havnt been able to figure that since ive started listening to trance i cant stand listening to anything else, but ill figure it out |

| I have a quick question for the hip hop addicts on this board. Is hip hop the same thing as trance? What i mean is, once a rapper leaves the "underground", does he become hated? just like some trance, once a DJ leaves the underground and starts playing "cheese", he becomes hated by most purists right? I think that that is a qualtiy that is shared by all sorts of popular music. |

yeah each music genre has some assosiate it with it.
hip hop-->gangs
trance--> drugs. thats a buch of bull to me however in trace we do not insult anyone. we do not call girls whores or insult other people. i just wish hiphop would do without all the insult i love ja rule he has good music and good voice but dont give me hip hop where all the lyrics constructed of the word .
P.S trance is more than ecstacy and glow sticks |

You ain't insult me with your post, it's cool. Em has crossed that chasm, which was a nice step, but I was just saying, Em is the only one these people know, it shows their lack of education of the culture they like to bash. I mean, if you say "it's not for me", that is cool. Listen to whatever you want to. but just saying that the whole genre sucks is not cool.
Genrecism? like the music version of racism? lol.

| Also, I just want to point out that I know absolutly nothing about rap/hip hop. Eminem was the first white rapper that I thought of. I bet you would have gotten a kick out of me saying vannilla ice instead eh :) |

And YES! once a rapper goes mainstream, they are hated severely. That is one way to lose the respect of your peers in the underground hiphop scene. Eminem used to be a tiiiight underground freestyler. Competed in the world championships, and if I'm not mistaken won one year. But once Dr. Dre signed him, the underground dis-owned him, basically. Just an example.
But the 2 music types are actually alot alike upon inspection.

But yeah, back to your original point, Hiphop is alot like Trance, you have to know pretty much everything about the culture to truley enjoy it.
Since I was a little kid I have gone through stages of liking (in order) country, rock, rap, and now techno(trance), and I play classical and jazz sax. I'm very glad I've gotten to appreciate and participate in all of the major musical cultures. It has allowed me to really be educated about the differnt musical styles throughout the world, and has allowed me to speak freely about all of them.
But I'm in Trance now, and I'm staying, I think :D
But there are definatly just as many things to understand and appreciate about hiphop as any other genre, even trance.:toothless

listen, "underground" rap is the biggest load of BS. every underground rapper's goal is to make it in the big times and make money off their music. I remember a few years ago Rass Kass was big on the "underground" scene and "underground" people thought they were cool if they listened to them , i turn on muchmusic one night out of sheer stupidity and what do you know.... a Rass Kass video with them rapping about how hardcore they are. if a rappers underground, it's because he's not good enough (at whatever) to sell records.
would you not admit that raps main theme is being more hardcore then your counterpart? list me all the rappers you like and I'll find dozens of songs with lyrics that state exactly that. it's basic human nature, and it is in it's most basic form; some loud mouthed jackass using a mix of hyperbole and delusion to mark their territory, so to speak.
musically, I just don't see the appeal. i mean, if i bang a congo drum and clash a fork against a cheese grater a few times I could come up with the hook behind a common rap song. it seems like the message and lifestyle is the biggest appeal. that's why you have so many wiggers. they're insecure middle class sheep waiting to be herded by the latest trend; rap.
don't label rationilizing rap music to yourself and your insecurities as making "valid" points above naysayers, you're entitled to your opinion but don't act like people who chose not to like rap are close minded or racist because they don't listen to music that's on a simian level of conciousness (in my opinion).
