maybe i was justifying it to myself ;)

I like afterhours prog and this is good.

Am going to have to give a few more listens but at first round, sounded well nicely done

Finally listened to this mix yesterday

Good effort, but while still enjoyable it did not much for me, and I'm also into deeper sounds whether it's house or techno. Maybe because most tracks are tech-housey and a bit predictable, even if some individual tracks are well done. Mixing is solid but there was no surprise.
Keep in mind i'm very picky with what I consider interesting music these days.
In the end I may sound harsher than I am: I enjoyed parts of it but I was not blown away like I was by a few other mixes I heard recently (not on TA). And I know how much effort it is to make such a mix (track selection, training, etc..) :)

My only nitpick is that the transition between more happy tunes and the dark creepy tunes seems to contrast too much. What I mean is the transition between two types of prog doesn't seem to flow well. Maybe a tune that is some what happy and somewhat dark as in transition tune might have made the set flow better

You're probably talking about when I mixed into working? that's the only 'happy' track I can think of. Not sure what you mean by prog though?

@bubblegum - yeah the idea with this mix was definitely to make something smooth and flowing, creating deliberate tension, so there aren't many surprises. I play a lot different live however.

kind of agreeing with bubbleguum.. its deep alright, but it doesnt have that much depth.. more experience more time and this will come...

im gonna dig up one of my buddy's deep house mixes.. he plays all the time in baltimore, been spinning for yeeears and yeeears, all vinyl, and it's something else

Sorry, could you clarify this for me? it's poetic but i don't get it lol

Kinda feels like it's trying a bit too hard.. I'm not sure to be honest... it doesn't sparkle

its not that the mixing isnt good, it's not that the tracks arent good it just doesnt do anything to really stand out and shine... at least for my ears.

i know that's still pretty vague but it's all i have at the moment

silly me :nervous:

I have no idea what I was thinking. (I think I was drunk...) lol

nefardec
@allied - ok, yeah i get you. there's nothing you can say, other than some mixes have it and some don't.

it seems that maybe it's too tame for some ears. I

this is criticism i got from a close friend right when i released it:

quote:
Hey, just listened to it. Technically I can't fault it, lovely progression, I don't even have a clue when some of the tracks change. Can't hear a single glitch or jarring clash of keys or rhythms. It is almost like listening to a smooth improv Jazz session or something.

And that is my problem with it. I mean, its beautiful... but it just doesn't "do it" for me.

So yeah, I'm taking notes on it. You're completely right about experience. I've only deejayed 3 years and only seriously for maybe a year and a half. And only in the last few months have I really been able to dedicate myself to a scene. So I'm in a constant state of self-reflection and taking in everything around me. It's the negative criticism that motivates me most anyways

it's funny you guys criticize this aspect of the mix, because drama in a mix is one of the defining aspects of a good mix for me. i find it easier to create drama in a live set when there is a crowd - maybe when i am in a closed studio recording a cd mix i lose it.
EvilTree
I think I was talking about the programming around 47 min mark where it goes to that acid tune. It sounds very odd
