| Thanks, glad you liked it. Part of the reason you don't notice the transitions is there are nearly always 2 tracks playing. :p |

I guess I'll be the first to offer a less TA-esque opinion.
With all due respect for your musical preference and those who share it,...I have to admit that it left something to be desired...not because it was a poor representation of the kind of "music" that you LIKE, but because it fails to actually even qualify as beautiful music to me, unless, of course I tried to fool myself that if I were to enter into some "greater" and "deeper" mindframe I might be able to appreciate it's majestically subtle beauty. I guess we could try to sound really sophisticated here but maybe its time we get a little real with ourselves. The whole "music" structure itself just screams too much of the pseudo-elitest sound, replete with a random array of electronic noises that fail to really produce a flowing or purposeful harmony.
I also can't see how this could be hypnotic unless someone is under the influence of substances, otherwise it's just rather boring and needlessly repetitive. We obviously all have our opinions on what we find "hypnotic"...Personally my tastes call for a more heavy emphasis on melodic patterns in conjunction with danceable beats....not to be confused with shallow commercial productions.
"trance music" to me represents a concept of a style of music that is beautiful, danceable, euphoric and even emotional...and I find it rather disheartening to find so many former-trance fans eventually trying to pretend that they have achieved some higher level of musical appreciation by "progressing" into less and less musically recognizable productions.... I mean, how minimal and noisy and bereft of melody does music have to get before we can finally get over this foolish fear of being called a cheeshead?

I think you might find it more useful to talk to the producers about that...
obviously different people have different concepts of beauty and musicality.
some people like thomas kinkade paintings. i like duchamp
you see it as chinscratching music, and i see it as dancing your ass off music.
in this situation you're like a big texan looking for a porterhouse in a raw organic vegan restaurant ;) |

Very ironic you should say that, considering that I am a vegan ;)
As a side note, I did really try to like the set, and at moments I thought it might actually develop into something to my liking but apparently the magic eluded me. I'll give it a few more listens! |

i am a little confused by your actual criticism though
sounds like you're just against a new type of music that you can't get into
i absolutely love trance, just not saccharine trance with simplistic rhythms and obvious melodies/chord progressions. there is 'cheese' in every genre, where i think 'cheese' would be defined as something that sticks absurdly and unoriginally close to the guidlines of a specific 'genre' in order to gain popular appeal or easy understanding. i listened to this kind of thing at one point in my life because i knew nothing else. as i deejayed and lived more i started to develop different ideas about what is important to me, and this mix is the result of this process - it's where i'm at right now. i have mixes from two years ago that might be right up your alley.

My criticism is specifically targeted toward a growing movement in the EDM scene which pretentiously prides itself in being able to reach a higher level of musical consciousness beyond that of a regular listening individual. (Keeping in mind that I believe this is actually true to some extent. I find far too many people unable to appreciate more complex productions that I myself enjoy....my point addressing the excessive lengths of this concept, notwithstanding.
In other words, anything resembling a simple vocal, guitar or piano arragement would be considered "cheese" (a relative and broad word) because it is considered too "recognizable".
Ultra-elitism, which happens to be phony IMO, leads to an inordinate preoccupation with trying to be so out of touch with anything that may actually have a pleasurable "hook" or recognizable "tune" that it generally finds itself digressing into a pile of senseless noise which is then dubbed "intelligent music".
Obviously I'm not trying to say that the tracks in your set have gone exactly THAT far, but they are certainly heading in that direction. And believe it or not, I already went through my phase of this, until I found myself realizing how silly it actually was (I never did get to the point where I could really enjoy the more random stuff).
Interestingly enough, I just ended up going right back to the more simple, yet relatively "sophisticated" trance that I was listening to before and realized that it wasn't necessary for me to think of it as something I've "grown out of". I've been listening to electronic music and trance for quite sometime, hence I understand that there are many phases that an individual may experience during their musical journey.
But with that said, the entire topic about music is so subjective anyway that I try to avoid creating a senseless debate over it, nevertheless I thought I'd state my opinion.

in any case i appreciate the bump
i hope you can see the nagging elitism in your own opinions though.
i'm just doing what i love.
this music is mostly about the sound, not the melody or harmony or something like that. if i want that I listen to debussy or miles davis. i pick tracks because to me the sounds are lush, hypnotic, and therapeutic. it's a very different kind of appreciation of music |
