I'm kinda curious that with today's overwhelming info on smoking and it's dangers, why are young people still sparking up and getting addicted to it? We've known since early last century about the links to cancer. Even Hitler's scientists came to the same conclusion. In the 90's we found out that in the 60's tobacco companies withheld direct evidence to the link to cancer and buried the reports. Kids these days are hounded with all these fact's, yet they still spark up a smoke. I'm not talking about some type of recreational drug that many do, weather they are young or old, on the weekends at a party or club (depending on age).

So if your young... why did you start to smoke knowing all of this? Most likely you now can't stop.

They do it for the same reason I pointed out in that drinking thread a few days ago. Rebellion.

It's off-limits to them until they're 18, everybody and their second cousin says you shouldn't do it. If they do it, it's their way of rebelling.

Im turning 16 in 10 days and i've never put a cigarette in my mouth and never want, that and drugs, and I'm not the only one. Its really not all or even most of us that smoke. It's just that the retarded ones stand out.

we also know the problems with alcohol and drugs.. yet poeple still do them...

its not an image thing.... its more like a "i like it" thing.

Some start to fit in with the fags while others continue because they see it as a daily routine.

At that age, peers have such a strong influence that everything else, reason and logic included, take a backseat. At least that's why I smoked as a teen. Luckily I gave it up years ago, though.

teenagers like to do what authority tells them not to in order to establish their sense of indepedence and maturity. most adults do it for social affiliation

I would believe that smoking pot and smoking cigarettes is different...

Do cigarettes really give you a feeling worth smoking for? I've smoked numerous times and it was nothing worth smoking for. It was more of just a casual kind of social thing than it was an I like it thing.
