doing the subbass

I got a subwoofer put in my car a little while ago, and my edm records (mostly compilation cds) sound like **** and very inconsistent across tracks on the cd. it's mainly the subbass that is a problem, because lots of kicks on tracks have this long ass tail that just booms throughout the beat, and makes the track sound sloppy and incoherent. But some sound alright, mainly the tracks that have short kicks and/or breaks. I guess the subbass is done a little differently in those ones. But most trance sounds like a big mess. Before you go and say it's my sub thats the problem, your only half right because it's a bandpass box and it is not designed for really punchy bass like sealed boxes are.
So some advice I wanted to give: Keep your subbass short and sweet. Too much of that boom sounds like utter ****. If you mix on monitors or headphones, go out and listen to the song on a CAR with a subwoofer.
I don't wanna get into a hip-hop vs. trance kinda things about this. But a good track sounds decent on all systems. |

Or you could just turn down the gain on your sub... |

ok, lets all start mastering/producing specifically for the unintelligent minority that stick the wrong type of sub in their car! thats heaps smart. how do you come up with this stuff?
/end sarcasm
i dont give two s what my songs sound like on your wack car sound system. i'd rather they sounded good on a hifi/club. this is 100% your fault, and no one elses. the mastering process is to ensure your song sounds good on as many systems as possible. unfortunately, that does not include systems that are screwed up.
get a new sub ;) |

Not even that, he is probably like one of those retarted people who have their subs set up at +20db. We have few guys like that down my street. I dont have a problem with that, unless theyre coming back home at 2am with that up loud. :whip: :whip: :whip: |

actually it's one of the problems of almost all vengeance kicks everybody outthere seems to use. they have a really long release in the low freqs. so if you're playing low subbasses it will kill the whole sub dynamics and just overfill the lows... |

to the haters who probably dont even have cars, this is not about the "wrong" type of sub in my car, or it's gain level. its about production. its about how 90% of trance sounds like because no one seems to know how to do a subbass properly, probably because they don't have a subwoofer and insist on using little small monitors.
it might sound good on your monitors, like the WOOHOO BASS! feeling you might get when you jam the low end up way too high. sloppy bass isn't doing your music any good. and it's partially why i think trance is dying.
keep the bass short and staccato on your kicks. you don;t get that "ooomm" sound you get the "pom" sound which is so much nicer :D |

well all the Vengeance kicks are from some song that is pro-made so im sure they are ok....so i doubt they are bad...but maybe they have some bassline or something included in them....
..you guys sure are hard on people hehe
./..btw 'trance is dying'.....if anythingi think itll make a comebackive heard some really good stuff lately surprisingly...but who cares if its dying or becoming commercial.if you like it you like it |

IMHO sub bass is far less important for trance than alot of other music styles.
Prefer kicks with more chest thump in the 100hz area - Psy, Hardhouse and Aly Fila / Tyas type kicks. |

flutlicht junkiy...thats cool if you like the punchy kicks..but trance does benifit from sub stuff.......for sure...
my favorite is driving stuff......which very much so benifits from sub freq's.... first thing that comes to mind lately is Michael Dow's 'badlands' i think its called...check it out on his myspace...without any sub range alot of driving trance tracks would not have that feel... |
