Arrogance

I noticed something curious reading through threads on here - on no other kind of forum do I see such arrogance and antagonism between the people who contribute. Why is this? I'm open to suggestions but here are some theories of mine;
1. Arrogance is intrinsic to a DJs nature as you have to be arrogant to get up there and expect 100s of people are gonna be interested in the music you play and (in some cases) near worship you for playing music that isn't really yours by creation.
2. A lot of DJs are frustrated musicians who know deep down that what we do involves far less talent that playing an instrument well and DJ as a means to get in front of a crowd without having any real musical talent in terms of playing an instrument.
Personally I'd opt for no 1 but as I don't play out, maybe I lack the right arrogance in the first place. |

i'm trained in guitar and saxaphone, next up are drums and piano
djing doesn't take far less talent, it may take a different kind of talent but it's still talent (and a lot of it in some cases)
go watch a dmc competition and tell me turntables aren't instruments
don't cheapen my profession
i've invested a HUGE amount of time and money into my craft, probably more than most musicians
but it's that kind of sacrifice that gets you places
that arrogance is well earned through over 7 years of practice, personal sacrifice and paying my dues
i don't speak cause i like to hear myself talking, i speak through experience, take my advise or leave it, i'm the one running club nights and djing numerous residencies, doesn't really matter to me what you do |

| DJing is all in the head. It's mental work. Playing an instrument is mostly a physical thing. They're two completely different things that shouldn't even be compared. |

Like Tony, I'm also classically trained in Piano and alto Sax as well as Viola. I find DJ'ing to be just as dynamic and difficult as playing any other instrument, it's simply a different way of thinking and performing. As far as arrogance is concerned I think you're a bit judgmental about DJ's in general. I certainly agree that TA is a particularly rough forum to deal with, way too much sarcasm and a lot of people who think they are the know-all be-all of EDM and don't even get out of the house...but extending this to stereotyping DJ's isn't called for imo.
personally I liken dj'ing to conducting a symphony rather than playing a single instrument, arguably much more important. my 2cts

I can't argue with that. Inteligent and elegant.
Really, I'm just pissed that I've reached a sticking point where I don't feel I'm improving and am thinking 'why the F am I doing this?'
I've been in this place before and come on here for motivation so I don't get the arrogance.
I shouldn't have generalised so I will add that the guys who really seem to know their stuff and have been around are helpful and post staight forward replies, regardless of content.
Maybe that in itself says something about arrogant posts.
I don't sit at home dreaming about an adoring crowd, I just do it coz I like the music and want to see where I can take it and at the moment, I don't feel that's very far.
So I'll keep reading and twiddling those knobs. |

arrogance should be avoided. it will always end up putting true fans off you. seven years of dj experience is nothing! in 6 months you can learn how to mix like a pro. the rest of the time is spent building a particular sound of your own. and 7 years still aint enough to have a rock solid background in edm.
onto the point..
imo arrogance is something that people often use to fool others into thinking they are better than they are. it gives them and others a feeling that they are more important than everyone else. ultimately it aint hard to have a good taste in music - you either got it or you aint! djing may involve a degree of technical skill, but it certainly isnt something that people can be overly arrogant about. after all, it is just the art of knowing/liking music that others like. |

| I'm a dj that is a classically trained in guitar and piani. grew up around music, father being in a hairband growing up so it was always around. I made the choice to dj becuase i love dancing, edm music is only genre worldwide accepted my all races, ages and sexual gender. And didn't want to be in rock or metal band becuase of fathers footsteps. My father gave me hell at first and said same things about dj's they have no talent etc. Now being a dj and also being a trained musicain, DJing is harder than everybody thinks. If it was easy more people would be doing it. |

The few people I know who are really good at playing guitar and signing are far more arrogant then the good DJs that I know.
It is true that mixing can be instant gratification because any idiot can get two tracks, cross fade them and then label themselves a DJ but it takes someone with a lot of skill to rock a huge crowd of people who know there music. |
