With regards to the Peter Hook thing, I don't think that people on the whole are defending him as such, I just think that some people get less offended by it than others.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure how HE can live with the idea more than anything, but I'm not going to loose sleep over it.
Guys like this will come and go, just like young DJs who think they are the mutts nuts will come and go. Very few of us will ever go on to make much of an impression on anything (sad but true). But we have to remain strong in the belief that we can or we stand no chance.
The most inspirational people I have met in my life, DJs or otherwise have all had an outlook where they focus on what they are doing and not too much on what others are up to, good or bad. :)
Essentially that's the only difference, don't think that anyone thinks what he is doing is good.
Is he damaging DJing? Probably not, but the jury is still out on that one...

He he... could probably coin a whole new expression, i.e. doing a Pete Hook
Peter Hook - A 'doing' word to describe a DJ or Performance artist who is dancing in an excentric and exagerated fashion, whilst displaying a facial expression suggesting that his/her head is about to explode or they are about to soil their pants. Or even worse... both.
