I've been thinking about this alot today...
I've been a complete selfish cvnt basically. Everything has been handed to me on a silver platter throughout my entire life. I'm already an organ donor but that's about as far as I've gone.
I'm making a rule for myself to give blood once a year. I'm going in next monday when all the alcohol has cleared out. :p
So that's all well and good... but I feel like I need to do something more. I've been considering doing a shift at a homeless shelter or chilling out with sick children, but maybe there are better places my efforts can go? I thought about sponsoring a child, but that just seems like such a waste of money; cherry picking one person will make little difference, and offers the society a pretty poor return for the amount of money invested. I considered making donations to charities but most of them are just money sucking black holes.
Any ideas? I want to donate a considerable ammount of money (for an unemployed uni student) to a charity that will actually put most of it towards education and infrastructure in the really fvcked up countries that need it most... Not considering local charities at all; Australia has minimal problems, most of which are of it's own making. |

| How about get involved in organizations that help build homes for needy families. Here in th US we have Habitat for Humanity maybe there is a similar organization in Australia that allows you to go help build homes abroad. A friend of mine went to Mexico and did that for two months during a summer. You could also try to do the Peace Corp thing when you graduate as well. Kudos for taking the time to think about how you can help the world around you. |

| I dont donate to charities because it bull. Where the hell is our money going?? How many cancer walks, Aids walks, fund drives ect can we have and were still not any closer to a cure. Lots of homeless people wanna be homeless. Ive volunteered to feed homeless people because I needed to do community service to gradguate highschool and many of the people there looked veryy well fed and i even saw a few wearing nicer shoes then i do. I know there are some people who actually do need the help but there are so many people who just abuse the I just cant do it. Besides theyre just gonna spend the money on drugs and alcohol.......oh wait so was I :D |

| Ah the futility of it all. Just spend your money on records or something. Unless you're 100% ready to make a commitment I'd stay away from the charity lane. If you're truly wanting to help you can donate your time to working in 3rd world countries rebuilding houses/schools and teaching. Been there, done that - Uganda Its all futile |

+1 on the peace corps. I'm considering joining myself. It's not an easy decision, since you will be sent to live in a foreign country for 2 years. It's a long ass time, but it's also a great thing to do. It may be easier for me, since if I do go through with this, I'll be able to go to my home country (Ukraine). I can't imagine getting sent to some war-torn country in Africa |

Make an anonymous donation to the Salvation Army. They do GREAT work in all sorts of situations...helping people who lose their houses to fire, giving dinners to the homeless and helping them find jobs, etc.
My dad is a cop, and he told me when they used to get murder cases downtown in the winter, the salvation army would always bring sandiches and coffee to the cops working the scene in the middle of the night. They also donate teddy bears to the cops. Each patrol car has one in the trunk...and they give them to children at places where there is domestic violence between the parents...
The SA does all kinds of good crap like that. They deserve the help.
Of course, if you really want to make the world a better place, you will donate to the link in my sig ;) |

I can't believe those s either. We donated a few things to salvation army and they are still bothering us. I also had a good laugh once when some police department called us for donation (they wanted to get new radar guns or something). I think I've donated enough to them through BS tickets and fines that I had to pay during the last 5 years or so. |
