yes it makes a difference because then the request is out there and the DJ may think you are going to do it anyways so they will play crappier or not play their new stuff.

I have always taken pride with the good friendships I have evolved with many of the well known DJ's , as with any friendship comes respect and that includes not asking them what a typical fan would ask
much as i want to have a copy of the set I value the relationship more and I have seen the look on a dj's face when someone they relate to as a friend / helper/ tech suddenly becomes a fan and asks for "something".
i don't know if this is quite making sense , but this also relates to working with bands and other artists , over the years you end up interacting with hollywood types dj's artists etc and the one common thing that makes everyones life easy is to try to behave like they are regular people and not be in awe of thier status or be asking for autographs etc.
this is one reason I avoid photo ops as again many people claim friendship with famous people because of thier pictures with them , but trust me the photographer just immediately becomes "uncool" in thier eyes. Maybe other techs ask but , I value my friends more than a set by them.
as a footnote this often ends up with rewards such as unreleased tracks or exclusive mixes by these dj's ending up being given to me as a thank you for the work, point in case Pablo (chus and ceballos) gave me his own copy of bring the drums back remix that he was playing the first time they were at the docks long before it was released on condition I didn't copy it.

Interesting POV.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

i'm uber late posting this... but maybe better late than never??

If you're not in for a semi-interesting or perhaps even boring read, just skip my posts. ;)

WARNING: LONG PERHAPS BORING READ AHEAD! W00T!

Oh, i'm UBER-behind on this one, but i have a sordid tale of woe to put out there that prefaces this review, plus i have a few pictures I wanna post. :) So forgive the tardy post, as I've been deep into some home studies, a SCUBA course, and work lately, so the after hours computer action hasn't been happening.

But now I stole a few moments!

So here goes the tale of Ni-Cd's woe on the Canada Long weekend.

Prelude

Ok, so the last long weekend that past, the May 24, my crew and I decided to hit Sibbald point to camp (provincial park). That turned out to be quite a stressful time with the alcohol-ban on...cops constantly walking up and down the in-roads, coming right into campsites, disturbing conversations, asking questions, raiding other sites, raiding ours, all for the glory of banning alcohol (we ended up ditching all of ours the first night, not worth the stress)--but we got harassed anyways. As a result, we decided we would NOT be camping in a provincial park any other long weekends.

Well, as the Long weekend for Canada day approached, we found ourselves ansy, and decided to find a camping spot again, regardless of our first experience. Like that ol' ex-girlfriend you know you shouldn't call, but you just can't resist--that's how we were.

After calling around to several camp grounds we were shocked to find out that every local campsite, including sibbald, was COMPLETELY booked. Like, not even a single spot open. After chewing on it a bit...not wanting to stay home in front of the computer (we try to avoid that in the summer), we decided to go and visit mom and dad's trailer up on elephant lake.

This is a huge step for us; it is an obvious indication of our desperateness...there's a few shortcomings with the trailer...

1. it's 2.5 hours away...north! Not exactly next door
2. it's a trailer park... everyone knows everyone, and your nieghbour is RIGHT in your face...no privacy
3. weather can be unpredictable, not a lot of local weather reporting stations for elephant lake road

There's some real pros to the scenario though...

1. Trailer is about 9' from the water's edge...a beautiful lake
2. in the middle of nowhere with awesome hiking possibilities
3. fire pit for evening fires. :)

So, I took work off Friday afternoon early, and up we went...

It was an awesome day... not too hot, not too cold, so i put the windows down and opened up the sunroof...

Our little group was the kiddo, my sis, the dog and Leap. Kyle and meggers would meet us up there later. Johnny Action was off to Pennsylvania to do some riding.

As we turn onto highway 12 for the first leg of our journey, we are immediately confronted with long weekend, cottage country traffic. What did we expect, right? Bumper to bumper for miles and going less than 10 km/h. W00T! Good thing i left early from work!

we finally get out of traffic and make our way north east along monck road and up into north eastern cottage country. It was BEAUTIFUL out.

We arrive at the camp site, my parent's trailer, park the car and start unpacking. Leap heads to the head office/general store to register us, and I start un-winterizing the trailer (dad hadn't been there yet that year).

They had a new wood deck off the front of the trailer and a retractable canopy system. I put out a lawn chair and sat down for a moment, and looked out over the lake...

I looked at the clouds rolling in, and thought it might rain a little later on in the evening. The forecast for both days was sunny and 25, but i thought we'd be prepared for a little rain.

So I made the decision to open the retractable canopy.... my friends, this decision changed the course of the entire weekend for me.

Leap gave me a hand, and we spun out the canvas over top of the new deck... there were two long bars running from each extended corner, back to the trailer, at foot level...so we figured out to unclip each one, in order to clip it into an anchor point on the deck below each corner of the canvas. It took some work, but we had it fully extended and clipped in. It was pulled pretty taut and seemed well secured. Happy with our work, we started the bbq and set out a few more chairs in anticipation of meg and kyle coming.

Then the holy wrath of God descended upon me... the wind started to pick up....waves formed on the lake, and within a few moments, gale force winds rocking the trailers poured through the park. I heard a funny noise, and FWOSH, the canopy slid neatly out of the two front pole/secure points, pivoting where attached to the trailer, and with a loud BANG, slammed down on top of the trailer. I heard an odd crunching noise... the wind was LOUD! The canvas continued to flap around on top of the trailer, slamming up and down again and again with parts of the heavy poles still attached, bent over assisting in the maelstrom. I looked around quickly to see if anyone had been hurt--leap seemed unhurt, though she was underneath when it blew up, poles must have just missed her, kids were inside, and the dog...well the dog was being blown away, kept tethered only by her leash.

A few neighbours and i wrangled the canvas back down with the wind gusting around and surveyed the damage... two skylights damaged on top of the trailer were smashed, and the harness/poles were all bent and unusable... i looked at where it was connected and determined that it couldn't easily be disconnected from the trailer...the winds continued to threaten more damage, so with the neighbours advice bolstering me, we decided to cut the fabric from the trailer.

When all the dust settled, and I realized that my parents were hoping to sell the trailer soon... my heart sank, and i further realized that two simple clips that were overlooked would have kept the awning from sailing up into the heavens.

at this realization, the wind settled, and the lake returned to glass. I kid you not!

I slumped into a chair in front of the fire pit...

The night grew dark, and I decided to call my dad to let him know the bad news, and find out how much $$ i'd owe to repair/replace it! Looking at my cel: no signal. at all...zippo. Duh! we're way up north!

Then I realized the time... it was 10:30...no sign of Kyle or meggers... what if they had gotten lost? I figured they had probably not located the place and turned around and went home. Woe is me indeed, what a crazy first night!

However, not all was lost, Kyle and meg showed up around 11, and as I spun my tale of woe to them (as a creepy fire-side story of horror and tragedy), Kyle declared "Well buddy, it can only go up from here!"

We got the fire burning and watched the last of the evening light disappear into the night sky...meggers plugged in some tunes and i finally felt some relaxation coming over. We decided to turn it in for the night and hope for better luck the next day!

The next morning, I awoke early and a beautiful vanilla sky greeted me, i couldn't believe the amazing reflections in the water, and tried to capture some...

I thought...today is going to be different! New start, new ideas, new energy!

Well...i was wrong.

On Saturday:

1. the neighbour told me our water hook up was leaky, i tried to adjust it, breaking it all together
2. i dropped our camera while hiking among the falls
3. after using the washroom, there were no paper towels, so i hit the lights (you know, to conserve energy) and got electrocuted... leap thought i had stubbed my toe or suddenly contracted a stroke.
4. it started to pour rain on a weekend boasting sunny skies and a high of 25
5. did i mention we nearly hit a deer on the way up?
6. etc.
7. etc.

I sank to my knees, in the rain...defeated...

So I won't bore you anymore with my tale of woe, my prelude of pain. Suffice it to say that later Saturday, we all looked at each other, and said 'let's go home!!!

I went to my parents and dropped off my sis... my dad took the news really well, he'd go up next weekend to survey the damage; we drove back to keswick, had a big dinner, and immediately went to bed after listening to a chill Nathan Barato set. Kyle and I agreed before crashing we'd hit up Addy, C&C as previously discussed, and try our (my) luck one last time.

So you can imagine my trepidation in heading to a club atmosphere with the ENORMOUS dosage of bad luck I had up to that point. We just rested and chilled for a while, getting ready at a slow pace. the gals would stay home and get ready for lawler later that night.

I had anticipated Addy with C&C for quite a while. I have to admit, I was planning to attend this event SOLELY to hear Addy spin, as the only taste we've had of DJ Addy lately was at Dance 2 da beat...and that just wasn't enough for me. So here we were at an afternoon event at the beautiful next level venue...

Sunday afternoon, 4pm, gorgeous weather, giant green house, lots of beautiful people and heinikin, it appeared, was sponsoring the event. What could be better?

We got a drink (i drank pepsi, trying to cut down on the alcohol) and Kyle grabbed a beer, and we headed right to the front to see the man layin' down the SIC beats.

Right away I noticed that he wasn't using the CDJs, he was focusing completely on his MAC and what appeared to be a usb mixer board!

Btw, notice how some of the pictures are fuzzy? Yeah, that's because some idiot dropped his camera during a very unlucky weekend up north!

Addy did have some minor technical difficulties where the power supply wasn't staying in the power bar...so he called for duct tape...when none was immediately forthcoming, someone was volunteered to hold it plugged in while he spun.

It was UBER hot under the green-house like structure, so after dancing it up hard and agreeing that it was AWESOME to hear the tunes Addy was cranking out, we headed to the back, and it started turning into a reunion!

Gary (chinese insider!), Meredith and Sara (Northern Gal!)

Korhan and his wo-man! (and i just noticed now the cops in the background!)

Mr. Anderson!

Kriskool (with the ouchie headache) and a philosophically provocative tshirt... "we all sin"

CrazySerb and Irgz!

David Accccceee!

Ace was telling me that it was the worst vibe/crowd ever... 'rent a crowd'... i'll address that in a bit...

I txt'd DroppedAtBirth... 'where the heck are you buddy'...i'm seeing everyone else, but not my buddy yet..! in fact, i hadn't heard from him all afternoon...

Kyle and I headed back out to the dance floor where sooo many people were rippin it up hard to Addy's beats... Carolina (if you've seen her dance, you know her) was great to dance with...

I looked over and saw this big guy... it's SO rare to see him out!

DigitaaaaaaaaaaaaL!

Got a hug outta Jennypie too! w00t!

And soooo many others. It was a like a huge (drunken) family reunion! I was having a fantastic time socializing and listening to Addy's beats, basking in the sun and drinking pepsi. After such an exhausting weekend prior, it was good to just chill out and have a blast.

Finally the crowd surged, and I knew it was because of the appearance of Chus & Cebballos

some guy was dancing and painting a portrait of them while the festivities raged on:

Angela showed off her belt buckle to me. That was just plain creepy and cooL!

I asked Kyle to take a picture with this guy for me. If you were at the event, and you saw this guy... all i can say is... wow.

I got my first picture with Geli... it was AWESOME dancing it up with her! She gives it everything she has and dances like no one is watching. You can't but admire people like that...

I headed back under the green house for a bit and ran into part-owner of footwork, Steph!! I've never seen this guy not smiling and being genuinely friendly. He really wants everyone to have a good time... he told me Danny Howells is coming to Footwork, September 12th!!! (hope i got that date right) All I can say is I'm THERE for that one!

It was at this point that the afternoon suddenly came to an end, as I got a text from the gals saying their ride down to T.dot failed, and we'd have to make a complete round trip to go and get them. Sheldon's luck strikes AGAIN!!

Well, I had a great time, and heard Addy's set, so mission accomplished. I decided to shelve my disappointment and look forward to lawler and the sunrise set... last year's was sic!

on the way out, snapped one last picture of

Criiiibbbaaaayyyyyyyyy w00t w00t. We'll have to do a zone day some day soon eh buddy? i haven't been there in ages.

At that moment, my cel buzzed again with a txt... it was from DroppedAtBirth... 'yo! i just woke up! sorry buddy...'

i smirked and snapped one last pic of the crowd on the way out...

Kyle and i spent a little time on the patio before leaving grabbing a breather and chatting with friends, then kyle declared we were leaving; with meredith and sarah in toe, we headed out!

I thought to myself... well, that wasn't so bad...my luck didn't crush us too much... what I didn't know is that my luck would make itself fully known, in all its badness that evening at Lawler... dun dun DUN.
jchung52
judging by the one pic of addy, it looks like he recorded his set. anyone know of it?
Ni-Cd
StereoPrincess - LOVE that picture of you holding the cn tower, lol, sic! Great seeing you and RJ out. Always a great vibe and friendly hello.

Jchung... yeah, i saw that too; the mp3/wav recorder hooked up. I haven't heard word yet, but i hope so. *cue epic music* The vids you posted were great; thanks for doing that!
