That's because he's retarded. He just can't figure out how to boot from a CD.

You can ALWAYS install an operating system. Hell, just yank the hard drive out, put it in another machine, and put the PE on it, if nothing else works, which I sincerely doubt is the case either for him or for you or for Mike, whoever that is. Whether or not that operating system will work properly is a legitimate question, and I can potentially see issues with the crappy integrated sound not working because the manufacturer didn't make XP drivers. Potentially, not likely.

Still, if manufacturers are doing that, they're shooting themselves in the foot. I know that there aren't any non-technical users out there who really want to install Linux or any of that garbage, but many of them are still more comfortable with XP than Vista.

MikeyN, read his post about computers at work

I did some research on the topic, you can still install XP pro if your pc works in a 64 bit environment, so it does work; try again.

MikeyN, try installing XP PRO x64, it has to work, no way in hell that it won't, if it came loaded with Vista.

There are drivers for XP, everywhere; like DigiNut said, manufacturers would be shooting themselves in the foot for not making component drivers for users who are using XP (on newer PC models).

I use XP Pro and linux, out of all windows versions, XP Pro is the best version yet.

It's not a matter of getting XP to install and run on a Vista machine. That's the easy part.

You run into the roadblock when you discover that THERE ARE NO DRIVERS FOR YOUR HARDWARE!!!!!!!

So in your words. Yes, the manufacturers ARE shooting them selfs in the foot. It's probable a contract they have with Microsoft to not develop new XP drivers so everyone is forced to use Vista so Microsoft can collect all that juicy information about you.

I stupidly installed XP on a lappy that came with Vista without looking for drivers first. Upon finishing the XP installation I found that:

1. I could find no XP display drivers for the graphics card. Therefore I couldn't even get the screen to the proper resolution.

2. I could find no XP drivers for the wireless card. Therefore no internet.

Hell, for some reason the computer wouldn't even recognize the card reader which makes no sense. Face it guys. If you buy a new PC, you're probably stuck with Vista.

Still beats buying a Mac.

9/10 times, yes; unless you build it yourself to tailor your needs and OS/application/use preferences. it's true that not many people are computer literate, but by simply knowing your basic needs, would help the tech building your computer know what you'd be looking for.

Is it a brand laptop?

I have an IBM ThinkPad and I have encountered the same problem when I upgraded to a 100 GB HD and had to reinstall both Windows and Linux, + IBM drivers. Good thing of IBM's driver and system upgrade manager, it automatically installs the latest drivers for my system, without me having to remember to do so in the long run. That's way I always stick with IBM, their products are sometimes pricey, but when it's price vs value, you get more value in the long run; I say that from my personal experience with IBM.

Their website (IBM), has all sorts of drivers for XP, Vista, some for Linux, heck, even for good old Win 98.

Check the website of your laptop's manufacturer, for XP drivers instead, or ask them if they deliberately don't make the drivers available in order to push people into sticking with vista.

Roll back driver for that particular device, if windows has installed it by default, look up the brand of the device and install fresh new driver. All set.

^I checked EVERYWHERE for the drivers. Believe me there were none.

And yeah of course if you're building your own compy then you totally have the option of XP. It's a lil different with brand laptops unfortunately.

I have to say, I'm impressed with IBM having all those old drivers still.

And don't worry, the laptop was promptly returned. Gotta love Costco.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't remember this kind of backlash against XP when it came out. Way to improve your product, MS.
