Preset's or your own? (pg. 2)

I'm right there with you Diginut. I'd rather put my time into composing and production. Learning the intricacies of synthesis takes time, and I'm really not interested enough to stay with it. I do respect anyone who is skilled in sound creation. We need these people, because without them we wouldn't have the thousands of free synth patches available on the Net. Often times, I'll find a patch that inspires a whole song. If you dig down deep, you'll find a good patch that no one has ever used before.
I've gotten away from using factory presets, because I'm afraid some music snob is going to look down on that. Nothing wrong with presets, all that matters is that a track sounds good. I hear factory presets in major label productions quite often. I don't use drum loops, never have, they just sound "canned".
So anyway, I take the patches I download for free or buy, and I tweak them a little. Sometimes I don't tweak them at all. For arps, I usually turn off the sequenced pattern, and create my own in the piano roll. With pads I might adjust the attack/release a bit, or I might even adjust the voice volumes, or completey silence one of them.
I recently created a nice pad using atmosphere. I took a preset and changed out the voices, tweaked the settings, then added some effects to it. I have to say it sounds impressive. But Atmosphere is easy to use, because it uses samples. |

everyone uses presets... and by everyone, i mean people who actually have better things to do with their life other than obsess over a single sound for an hour. :p
it's important to know a bit about synthesis though, because you always need to tweak stuff to get it just right. |
i use and tweak presets a lot. stuff like reaktor or blue, is wwaaayyy to nerdy for me. it robs me of time i could use to actually make music. i also tend to buy equipment based on the presets first, tweakability second... if the sounds don't wow me, there better be something super special about it...
to me, it's bad enough to turn on my mpc and see a blank sequence, and have to make all my tracks from scratch... and now i have make up my own sounds from scratch too?
it's like you want to build a house... but you have to make your own hammer, nails, saw, and other tools... then you have to chop your own wood, and fabricate every little thing... then you get to build your house... way too much b.s. for someone like me. i just want to go to lowes, or home depot, and buy a bunch of , and start rocking. |

| i'd try not to use presets and rebuild whatever sounds that goes in my mind for that track. in any case if i can't create that sound, i'd ask around for some suggestions and tips, and if that doesn't help, i'd look into any presets that i have. |

right... which is three days later... by which time your window of inspiration has long since closed :p
real producers use presets and loops. people who dick around on moral crusades are not real producers, because usually they never finsh anything (decent).
...IMO! |

Happily use presets and tweak them to my liking, but also spend X amount of time when not writing a song just tweaking around and building patches.
It's mainly about work flow for me, if I'm in the middle of doing a track, and want a bass, I'll reach for a preset close to my liking and use that as the basis.
Also look at it from the point of view that some of the guys who created some of these presets are much better sound designers then I am, so why not utilise their skills.
I guess it's about balance at the end of the day.
Just came across this on another forum:
| quote: | | The synth's range of sounds is an ocean. Presets are the islands you can jump off from and swim to wherever you like. |

the only time i dont really start with presets is if im trying to make some kind of sweep/fx or something |

Haha, nice. It's a bit of a stretch - making your own hammer would be like programming your own synths in C++. But I can see the analogy to, say, cutting and buffing and sanding all the windows and assembling the doors yourself, and weaving your own carpets and mixing your own paints - those are some of the building blocks, and they aren't exactly commodities, but there are so many good choices that you wouldn't start from scratch unless you really enjoyed the process.
It's nice to be able to enjoy that, just silly to criticize those who don't. ;) |

to be honest, whenever i finish a track, although it could take a while to complete one, i would feel very much satisfied with it because at least the main sounds that is heard in the track is all original. i don't compete with time to churn out tracks, i take my own sweet time because i do songs for my own and not for others. but that's just me... |

you don't care enough about the sound to build it from the ground up?
you make ty music.
Mostly use machines that don't have presets, so its not a problem. |

Tell this to all the musicans that went out and bought DX7s or any other synth with an "alpha dial". |
