Haha, nice. It's a bit of a stretch - making your own hammer would be like programming your own synths in C++. But I can see the analogy to, say, cutting and buffing and sanding all the windows and assembling the doors yourself, and weaving your own carpets and mixing your own paints - those are some of the building blocks, and they aren't exactly commodities, but there are so many good choices that you wouldn't start from scratch unless you really enjoyed the process.

It's nice to be able to enjoy that, just silly to criticize those who don't. ;)

+1

You don't need to reinvent the wheel.

99,999999% of my sounds are built by me from scratch. often it would take more time to find a preset which would fullfill my expectation than build it from a init patch.

and for all synths i use i've built my own preset collection.

uhhh a dx7 is highly programmable what the are you talking about?

just because its fm synthesis and you use one data entry slider and a small digital screen doesnt mean you can't program the out of them.

Fm synthesis is famous for being nice and complex if desired.

jesus christ you can program mad pads on a dx7. What the is "alpha dial" theres no dial called that on my dx7.\

looks like the problem is you guys don't know how to dive into syths and learn them up.

It was pretty difficult to program so most people used them for the presets back then...

Go buy a DX7 on ebay, 90% chance it's still got the exact factory bank in it.

:p

Classic example of "cbf"!

i have to agree that original synthesis is the ideal way to go

i'm by no means a master at it, but I definitely spend a lot of time listening to sounds and trying to reproduce them, teaching myself synthesis in the process

i also am one of the crazies who builds stuff in pure data and max/msp so...

sometimes though you don't always have an idea about what you want a sound to sound like, and by swapping various presets you can quickly hear the effects and this can be a creative and inspirational process in itself
Watts
beats and beeps you missed the point of why a good portion of people bought those synths (it had nothing to do with generating their own sounds).

Why are you going to buy a guitar, trombone, or piano and try to get a different sound out of them? They are musicians, not synthesists. Not everyone buys a synthesizer to make electronic music.

what the kind of comparison is that?

a synth is an instrument of its own, the best part about it....is you can get a load of different sounds out of it...a guitar or a trombone...you buy those things cause you want to sound like they are supposed to sound.

and in regards to the original question, presets, damn, making your own patches is hella ez...and hella more convenient...plus...you have more control over wtf is coming out of ur speakers...i duno why you nigs is trippin so hard about '3 days to make a sound' WTF are you retarded? making a patch takes like 2 seconds.....................:conf: :conf: :conf: :conf: :conf: :conf: :conf: :conf: :conf:

Which is exactly the reason most people bought DX7s...

Btw, Im on your side of the whole 'preset or not' debate, I think its much better to make your own sounds, but the fact of the matter is that most DX7s were bought for their presets...

Uh... did that mysticalninja dude take over your account?

Dont over think it dude. Just do what you want. When you first start, use a preset as the base of ya sound for sure. As you get better at the synth, you wont need to do this as much. Just think of them as a good start to show you the 'concept' of the sound and then work from there.

For me, somethimes i mould a sound from a preset, sometimes i syth it from scratch.. it doesnt really matter as long as it sounds good. And trust me, the more you learn the synth.. the better sounds you'll be able to make, preset or no preset.
