I do like some (prog) trance music, yes.

If we're going to use Wikis, then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groove_%28music%29

Note the emphasis on variation within repetition and syncopation: things I've highlighted trance as not extensively featuring.

Now SYSTEM-J wrote that trance lacks groove, i.e. lacks a pronounced, enjoyable rhythm, that sounds like nonsense to me. That's why i raised the question of what he actually meant with "groove".

Don't around with what I wrote to make it easier to argue against. I didn't say trance "lacks groove", I said the "groove is lacking" in trance, which means it's substandard or unimpressive, for the reasons I've given.

I think syncopation is the most important aspect of dance music. More important than even a kick. Syncopation is what gets bodies moving. A syncopated bassline makes womens' hips move. Syncopated percs make your hands and feet move. As evidenced in trance music, a strong kick can only inspire mass fist pumping and bouncing.

edit: repetition, yes, is also key :p

I have mostly approached trance from a listening stand-point. That's probably why I preferred the more melodic style and still do. I think if I approached it from a dancers stand-point, I would be more into the rhythmic or "groove" style. I'd probably be more into psy, tech trance or the older stuff. Don't find most psy very listenable, only some melodic prog psy like Vibrasphere. Prefer house, drum n' bass, breakbeat and techno for dancing.

Never really experienced much trance live. I've seen Tiesto, Oakenfold and Armin a few times but there sets had tech trance, prog and some trance as well, but nothing like Trance Energy, Sensation or Gatecrasher back in the day. Armin I saw in a really small club twice. Tiesto was at Area:Two, and his set was very short. Saw him again at a pretty good size club (Bleu) and his set was alright. Kenneth Thomas (the warm up DJ) played better sets than either Armin or Tiesto. Oakenfold sucked both times I saw him (at Area:One, and State Theater in Detroit).

I still listen to some of the older trance sets I have, especially when Iw as heavily into the proggy trance coming out in 04/05 (when McProg started to become common)

Other than that most of todays trance doesn't interest me in the slightest.

I first was introduced to it 8 years ago and have never stopped listening to it since. It never gets old for me. What type of trance I listen to may vary from time to time but its always trance of somekind. I don't see that changing for a very long time.

montana
yes.

I can't say I like trance. I may like older classic trance (from < 1996) because I grew with it (along with techno and house). I hate formulaic music. Listening to electronic music in almost all genres since '90 so I've become very picky about what I consider quality.
